Mr. Annian Mowat Brand, III (December 17, 1920-April 28, 2010).  

 

SAVANNAH - Mr. Annian Mowat Brand, III, 89, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at Community Hospice in Vidalia. Mr. Brand was born on December 17, 1920 in Savannah. He was the son of the late Annian M. Brand, Jr. and Ione Lennon Brand Poston. Following graduation from The Alexander School in North Carolina, Mr. Brand enlisted in the Army and served as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. After completing his military service, Mr. Brand returned to Savannah where he worked for the Central of Georgia and Southern Railway Systems as a Trainman until his retirement. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Mills Brand with whom he had five children. He is survived by his former wife, Sarah Brand of Vidalia, GA; three daughters, Dorothy Brand Rowe of New Bern, N.C., Betty Brand Moxley of Vidalia, GA, and Marguerette Brand Shackleford of Atlanta, GA; two sons, John Revere Brand of Covington, GA, and Joseph Edward Brand of Lawrenceville, GA; seven grandchildren, three great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, April 30, 2010 at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ohoopee Regional Library 610 Jackson St., Vidalia, GA 30474-4746. Mrs. Pamela Clifford Palmer, age 89 of Vidalia, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native of Notgrove, England, and taught school in Cold Aston, England. She met her husband during World War II, and they moved to his home in Vidalia in 1946. She was a former member of the Alston United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Palmer, a daughter, Anita McLain, her parents, George and Hillary Davis Clifford, a sister, Mona Head, and a brother, George Clifford. She was loving and wonderful wife and mother.
 
Mrs. Palmer is survived by three daughters, Diana Harrison of North Augusta, South Carolina; Cathy and Mike Whorton of Vidalia; and Caroline and Darrell Cooper of Lyons, one brother, D.W. Clifford of Salisbury, England, three grandchildren, Joseph McDaniel of North Augusta; Steve Harrison of Beech Island, South Carolina; and Rebecca Bolton of Lyons, three great-grandchildren, Wesley McDaniel, Heather Harrison, and Hunter Bolton, and several nieces and nephews.
 
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, April 29th at 3:00 pm in the Pinecrest Cemetery with Reverend Ronald Rollins officiating.

REIDSVILLE, TATTNALL COUNTY, GEORGIA - Ms. Louise McCumber Durrence age 80, passed away Tuesday April 27, 2010 at Genesis Personal Care Home in Savannah under the care of her family and Spanish Oaks Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Hoover Durrence. She is survived by sisters, Faye Wilson of Savannah, Vickie Fanning of Reidsville; Six brothers, Walker McCumber, Lewis R. McCumber Jr. and Henry McCumber all of Savannah, Ralph McCumber of Meldrim, Edwin McCumber of Lyons, Jerry McCumber of Hinesville; Several nieces and nephews also survive. Lyons,
Mr. Robert Leon “Poff” Garbutt, age 99 of Lyons, died Friday, April 23, 2010 at the home he was born in on December 18, 1910. He graduated from Georgia Military College, and attended Georgia Institute of Technology. He worked as a civil engineer in building the Savannah Civic Center, St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Southeastern Tech in Atlanta, and numerous other large construction projects. Mr. Garbutt retired in 1973 and lovingly volunteered his time and energy to build the church he was so devoted to, the Lyons First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Bob Garbutt in 2006, and his parents, George Allie and Ruby Smith Garbutt.
 
Mr. Garbutt is survived by his wife of seventy-seven years, Madeline O. Garbutt of Lyons, two daughters, Jesslyn Garbutt Ezell of Albany; and Jeannine Garbutt Rollins of Atlanta, a daughter-in-law, Sandra Perkinson Garbutt of Lyons, ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
 
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 26th at 12:00 pm in the Lyons First United Methodist Church, 103 East Wesley Avenue, with Reverend James Aycock and Reverend Owen Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Lyons City Cemetery.
 
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00.

Claude Anderson (1918-April 14, 2010). 

 

SAVANNAH, CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA - Claude Anderson, 92, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at home under the care of Hospice Savannah. Born in Toombs County, Georgia, Claude was the son of the late Wright and Minnie Anderson. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Arena during World War II. He was employed by Union Bag-Camp Paper Corp, later known as Union Camp Corp, as a papermaker until his retirement in 1980. He was an active member of Clayton P. Miller Methodist Church in Savannah for many years, and spent his later years at his beloved Cokesbury United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Club. Claude had an abounding love for gospel music; he sponsored and organized countless gospel sings locally, was well-known in gospel music circles in several states, and was honored by WTOC TV as "Hometown Hero" for his support of the gospel music ministry. He had a deep and abiding love for the Lord, sharing his faith through hospital and at-home visits to the sick, tending to others in need, keeping his family connected by reunions and get-togethers, and showing his wonderful sense of humor to all. He will be greatly missed. Claude was preceded in death by two loving wives, Reba Overstreet Anderson and Lucille Norton Anderson. He was also predeceased by his twin brother Clyde Anderson and other siblings Lucille Anderson Perry, Wilbur Anderson, Harris Anderson, and Nellie Anderson Hogan. He is survived by step-daughters and husbands Sandra and Rudy Barton and Alice and Kenneth DuBose of Savannah; grandsons Chris Barton and wife Hannah and Todd Barton; great-grandson Colby Barton. He is also survived by brothers and wives Sanford and Audrey Anderson and Gilbert and Dean Anderson of Lyons, Georgia and Garland Anderson of Davenport, Florida, as well as a large number of nieces and nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial service celebrating Claude's life will be held at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, Savannah, Georgia on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 11:00 am. Mr. Harold Watson, age 62 of Mt. Vernon, died Saturday, April 17, 2010 in the Trinity Hospital in Augusta after an extended illness. He was a native of Montgomery County, and had resided in the Gracewood School and Hospital in Richmond Hill for the past forty-eight years. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Watson and a brother, T.A. Watson.

Mr. Watson is survived by his mother, Lucille "Lucy" Watson, one brother, Marvin (Betty) Watson, and a nephew, Stacy Watson all of Mt. Vernon, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 20th at 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon with Reverend Karl Hay officiating. Interment will follow in the Braddy Cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Nadine Campbell, age 77 of Vidalia, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia after sudden illness. She was a native of Buchanan, Michigan, grew up in San Francisco, California, and had lived in Vidalia most of her life. She retired from TG&Y, and the Super Ten in Vidalia. She was a Pink Lady at Meadows Regional Medical Center for several years, an active member of the Smith Street Baptist Church in Vidalia since 1970, a member of the Maratha Sunday School Class and served on numerous committees, including Bereavement and the Bus Ministry.
 
Mrs. Campbell is survived by her husband, William T. Campbell of Vidalia, two daughters, June C. (John) Jones of Adrian; and Carol (Berry) Crosby of Hazlehurst, one son, William S. Campbell of Vidalia, one sister, Bobbie Hughes of Vidalia, one brother, Harold Knapp of York, Pennsylvania, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
 
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17th at 10:00 am in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Chris Sheffield and Reverend Jimmy Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.
 
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Smith Street Baptist Church, 503 Smith St., Vidalia, GA 30474.

CLAXTON, EVANS COUNTY, GEORGIA - Jason Allen Collins, 32, passed away April 13, 2010. Jason was born in Brunswick, Georgia, on July 18, 1977. He was a 1995 graduate of Claxton High School, where he played golf, basketball and ran cross-country. Jason served in the United States Navy for 4 years being stationed in Gaeta, Italy, and was presently serving in the Naval Reserve. He was a 2002 graduate of the Culinary Arts Institute of Florida. As much as he loved cooking, he also enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid Canoochee River fisherman and held an extraordinary love for golf. Jason was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Sidney and Shirley Strickland, his paternal grandparents, Jakie and Nelle Collins and an uncle, Frankie Strickland. Survivors: his parents, Steve and Joy Collins of Claxton; one brother, Carter Collins of Statesboro; maternal grandmother, Betty (Bill) Elkins of Savannah; four aunts, Sandy (John M.) Strickland of Shellman Bluff, Carol (Joe) O'Connor of Atlanta, Memie Collins of Claxton and Becky Strickland of Claxton; six uncles, Jake (Penny) Collins of Statesboro, Carroll Collins of Claxton, Bill (Lynn) Collins of NC, Jimmy (Rhonda) Dasher of Vidalia, Rusty (Gail) Dasher of Acworth and Bob (Elaine) Dasher of Hinesville; and numerous cousins, other relatives and special friends. Mrs. Adelle Connell Thompson Kersey, age 66 of Vidalia, died Sunday, April 11, 2010 in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, a homemaker, and attended the North Thompson Baptist Church.
 
Mrs. Kersey is survived by four daughters, Mary Ann Thompson of Vidalia; Wanda Thompson of Glennville; Shelby Davis of Charleston, South Carolina; and Martha Connell of Vidalia, two sons, Mark Eugene Thompson and Robert Lamar Thompson both of Vidalia, three sisters, Brenda Smith of Lyons; Frances Bradham of Vidalia; and Annette Teague of Vidalia, one brother, Ronnie Connell of Claxton, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
 
Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, April 16th at 2:00 pm in the Cedar Crossing Cemetery with Reverend Henry Dowd officiating.

 LYONS, TOOMBS COUNTY, GEORGIA - Mr. George E. Smith, age 78, died April 11, 2010, at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, after an extended illness. He was a native of Fulton County. In his younger years, he was a Boy Scout and later became a Troop Leader. After graduating from Lyons High School, he attended Business College in Brunwick, for two years, and then attended Brewton Parker College, for two years. He then went to work with his father at City Tire and Battery Shop and remained there until he was called into the ministry and went to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and became ordained into the ministry in 1966. He then went to Altha Vista, Virginia, in ministry for a short period of time before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a very loving person setting a good example, and was an active member of Lyons First Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents George Glenn and Ida Elizabeth Thompson Smith. Survivors include 2 sisters Mrs. Jerry McRae of Lyons, and Mrs. Jackie Yarbrough of Guthrie Oklahoma, 1 nephew John McRae of Lyons, and 2 nieces Billie Jeanne Everett and Cheryl Downs both of Oklahoma. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Service for Mr. George Smith will be held Thursday, April 15, at 2:30 pm from First Baptist Church of Lyons with Reverend Dannie Williams officiating. Agnes Claxton Davis, age 74 of Uvalda, died Sunday, April 11, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a lifelong resident of Uvalda, retired from Oxford Industries in 1990, and was a member of the Smyrna United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Rickey Claxton 2002, and her parents, Broadus and Winnie Conner Williams.
 
Mrs. Davis is survived by two sons, Mickey Claxton of Uvalda; and Danny (Nikki) Claxton of Hazlehurst, five grandchildren, Brandy Clark of Baxley; Mark Claxton; Jason Claxton; Karlye Claxton, and Dawson “Bubba” Claxton all of Uvalda, and five great-grandchildren.
 
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 14th at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Bratton and Reverend Joe Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
 
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

LYONS, TOOMBS COUNTY, GEORGIA - Mr. Carlos Lee Price, 88, of Lyons, Georgia died April 10, 2010 in Palm Bay, Florida surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Price was born April 20, 1921 in Toombs County, Georgia, son of the late Jesse Cullen and Appie Price. He served in World War II and upon his honorable discharge, moved to Miami, Florida in 1947, where he resided for many years. Upon his return to Lyons, he built a home for himself and his wife of 56 years, Norma Wiggins Price, who preceded him in death in 1997. Mr. Price was a devoted family man whose priorities were to care for his wife and children always making sure their needs were met. Mr. Price was employed with Lindsley Lumber, Miami, Florida for 20 years and with Lark Builders, Lyons, Georgia for 20 years. He worked many years driving an 8-wheel truck, rising at 5:00 a.m., putting in a physically taxing day without complaint; rarely missing a day of work. Mr. Price was also an accomplished musician and licensed barber. Mr. Price is survived by and will be sorely missed by his children: daughters, Martha Sue Williams (George) of Cocoa, Florida and Sandra Jacobs (Harold) of Deltona, Florida. Five grandchildren: Angel Kaiser (Mike); Amber Jones (Kevin); Kathryn Bristol (Jim), George Williams (Kimye) and John Jacobs (Lourdes); 5 great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews; all of whom loved him dearly. BAXLEY, APPLING COUNTY, GEORGIA - Mildred Holt Whitaker, 96, died Saturday, April 10, 2010 at her residence. Mrs. Whitaker was born October 4, 1913 in Wilcox County to the late Dr. James Thomas Holt and Mittie Mixon Holt. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served in various positions. Mrs. Whitaker was a member of the Baxley Woman's Club and various Bridge Clubs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Arthur Whitaker, sister, Lucille Holt Fisher and 2 brothers, James Thomas Holt, Jr. and Abner Bennett Holt. Survivors: 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Mickey Lewis of Baxley and Pendry and Wayne Rountree of Sylvania; 6 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren. Thomas R. “T.R.” Clifton, age 85 of Ailey, died Friday, April 9, 2010 at his home after a brief illness. He was a native of Toombs County and had lived in Montgomery County since 1947. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater of Operation. He was a retired farmer, was a director with ASCS Farm Service Agency for thirty-two years, and was a director with the Department of Family and Children Services in Montgomery County for thirty-four years and retired in 2005. He retired in 2008 as a director with Farm Bureau in Montgomery County after forty years. He was a member of the McGregor Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Lula Tomlin Clifton.
 
Mr. Clifton is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Mary C. Clifton of Ailey, one son, Johnny Clifton and wife, Gloria of Ailey, three grandchildren, Candice of Savannah; Derek of Pooler, and Clay of Ailey, two sisters, Louie Dean Osborne of Lyons; and Doris Fant of Vidalia, and several nieces and nephews.
 
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 11th at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend David Blalock officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary K. Moseley, age 85 of Vidalia, formerly of Lyons, died Thursday, April 1, 2010 in the Bethany Nursing Center in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native of Winnsboro, North Carolina and had lived most of her life in Toombs County. She was a homemaker, a member of the New Beginning Church of God in Lyons, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie L. Moseley, Sr. in 1971 and a daughter, Jewel Moseley in 1988.
Mrs. Moseley is survived by four daughters, Evelyn Nobles of Washington, Georgia; Edna R. O'Neal of Vidalia; Gloria Dismuke of Normantown; and Dianne Hattaway of Douglas, three sons, Robert Lee Moseley of Claxton; David Mosley of Houston, Texas; and Jimmy R. Mosley of Collins, two brothers, Lester Kight and Ernest Kight both of Metter, eighteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 3rd at 11:00 am in the New Beginning Church of God with Reverend Mike Smith and Reverend Rodney Gibbs officiating. Betty Barber Elders 1932-2010

REIDSVILLE, TATTNALL COUNTY, GEORGIA - Betty Barber Elders, age 86 passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the Community Hospice Inpatient Center in Vidalia. She was born April 17, 1923 in Hoosick Falls, New York to Harold and Kathryn Barber. Betty attended Troy Business College in Troy NY. and Georgia Teacher's College in Statesboro, GA. In February of 1944, Betty enlisted in the Navy WAVES, and served in the 6th Naval District Intelligence Office at both NAS, Jacksonville, FL. and Ft. Sumter, Charleston, SC. After the war ended, she settled in Reidsville, GA. and worked many years for Nelson Sales Company. Betty then transferred to Ft. Stewart, where she retired in 1979 from the Comptrollers Office. In 1969, she married Telford Elders. After the Elders both retired, they purchased a Winnebago Motor Home and joined the Winnebago International Traveler's Club as Charter members. From then on, their life was one of travel-all over North America, all of the United States, Canadian Provinces, and many Mexican states were visited. She was a past Co-President of Georgia Winnie Rebels, and the Bago Tribe. She organized the WIT Singer's Club in Forest City, Iowa. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, joining in 1944, past Matron of the Rising Star Chap 384, (no longer in existence), and a present Emeritus member of Martha Washington #300, of Claxton, GA. In 1950, she joined the Reidsville United Methodist Church and its Chancel Choir. She was also a member of the Tommy Thomson Sunday school class and Wesleyan Service Guild. She was a Charter member of Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, member of the VFW Auxiliary, a Pink Lady Volunteer of the Tattnall Community Hospital, a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. She was also a member of NARFE, GSC Botanical Garden Society, Red Hat Society, Tattnall County Historic Preservation Inc. and was a past president of the Reidsville Garden Club and a member of Team Reidsville. She was preceded in death by her husband Telford, and a son, Robert "Hal" Odum. She is survived by a daughter, D. Fleta Wood; son, T. Edwin Elders; grandchildren, Brittany Juarez, Sophia Schmidt, Solita Hayes, Telford Wood, Thomas Elders, and Teresa Elders-McCue; great-grandchildren, Haley, Kayla, Carlos, Stephen, Ashley, Regan, David, Layla, Esperanza, Rachel, Andrew, Katie and Alex; one special niece, Dale Scott. Memorial services will be conducted 4:00pm Saturday April 10, 2010 from the Reidsville United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery with honors rendered by the US Navy. The family will receive friends at the Church beginning at 3:00pm Memorials may be given to the Reidsville United Methodist Church Food Pantry or the General Memorial Fund or Community Hospice Foundation or Humane Society or SPCA.
