Vidalia, Mrs. Kathy Sue Gunn, age 53 of Vidalia, died Saturday, September 11, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native of the Detroit, Michigan area. Upon marriage in 1977, Kathy's husband joined the Navy, and the two went on to live in several states before settling in Vidalia in 1986. She was a graduate of Georgia Southern University and earned a Master's Degree in Biology. She taught science for five years at J.R.Trippe Middle School in Vidalia, but her passion was the education and protection of sea turtles which led to her becoming the coordinator of the Magnolia Midlands Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center with East Georgia College in Swainsboro. She was an active member of The Oaks Baptist Church in Lyons where she taught the Youth Sunday School Class. She also was active in Women’s Missions and Relay For Life.

Mrs. Gunn is survived by her husband of thirty-three years, Marvin M. Gunn of Vidalia; one daughter, Sarah Jane Gunn McGann and her husband Jon of Pawley’s Island, South Carolina; one son, Aaron Jacob Gunn of Atlanta; her parents, John and Mary Curtis of Jonesboro, TN; three brothers, John Curtis of Wyandotte, Michigan; Joe Curtis of Southgate, Michigan; and Jerry Curtis of Jonesboro and one nephew.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 14th at 11:00 am at the Oaks Baptist Church with Reverend Josh Hughes officiating.

Lyons, Mr. Virgil D. Odom, age 69 of Lyons, died Saturday, August 28, 2010 in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Lyons, and retired as a supervisor with the Georgia Power Company after thirty years of service. He served in the National Guard, was a member of Vidalia Masonic Lodge #330, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lyons.

Mr. Odom is survived by his wife, Birdie Odom, one daughter, Lisa Odom-Miller, one son, Devlan Odom, and one brother, Ronald Odom all of Lyons, two sisters, Joyce Morris of Aiken, South Carolina, and Wanda Bass of Milledgeville, two grandchildren, Chase Miller and Brinley Miller both of Lyons, and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, August 30th at 11:00 am in the Lyons City Cemetery with Reverend Owen Williams and Reverend Barry S. Giddens officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:30.

Long Pond Community, Mrs. Marie Williams Cartwright Davis, age 78 of the Long Pond Community, died Saturday, August 28, 2010 in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia. She was a native of Telfair County, and moved to Montgomery County in 1974. She was a professional seamstress, retired from Uvalda Manufacturing and was a member of the Snow Hill Church of God near Glenwood. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Mary Lee Cameron Williams, two sons, Lawayne “Peebo” Davis and Jack Denny Cartwright, one sister, Nell Rainwater, and two brothers, Walter and Jack Williams.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband of thirty-six years, Leon W. Davis of Long Pond, six children, Bobby Cartwright and Donna of Oak Park and Lovejoy; Marie “Crickett” Conner of Soperton; Joyce Carver of Vidalia; Irwin Davis of McMinnville, Tennessee; Billy Cartwright and Peggy of Glenwood; and Mary Nell Fletcher and David of Columbus, North Carolina, nineteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren will also miss her.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 2nd at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Henry Dowd officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Willis, Glenn Russell (1959-2010)

Glenn Russell Willis, 50, of Two Rivers, Alaska, died Friday, July 2, 2010, at Madigan Army Medical Center, Ft. Lewis, WA, while recovering from surgery for kidney cancer.

Glenn was born in Vidalia on November 28, 1959, to R.W. and Murline Willis. Like his father, Glenn was an accomplished musician; he played saxophone in the Vidalia High School marching band and played acoustic and electric guitar with friends throughout his life.

Glenn joined the U.S. Air Force upon his graduation from VHS in 1977 and soon decided to make the military his career, retiring after 17 years at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. His career took him to many duty stations, including Statesboro, Texas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Montana and Colorado. He most enjoyed his six years in Germany, where he served in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

Glenn received numerous honors and medals, including the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 3 oak leaf clusters. He attended the USAF Leadership School, NCO Academy and Senior NCO Academy. He also earned an associate’s degree while in service.

Upon his retirement in 1994, Glenn accepted the position of assistant project manager for Lockheed Martin’s ground-based radar bomb scoring contract at Eielson Air Force Base near North Pole, Alaska. Later he took advantage of the VA’s education program and achieved the status of Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Microsoft Office Master Instructor. He used these skills in his computer consulting business and contracted with the State of Alaska to teach Microsoft Office to inmates at the Fairbanks Correctional Center.

Glenn enjoyed living in Alaska's rugged environment and delighted in telling stories of life in the “Great Refrigerator” to friends back home in Georgia. He taught himself to fly fish and spent many hours fishing from a canoe as his wife paddled. Glenn also loved his home on 10 acres of spruce woods in the tiny community of Two Rivers, 30 miles from Fairbanks. He delighted in working on his hobby farm, where he raised pheasants, chickens, guinea fowl and geese.

Glenn was active in several veterans’ organizations, including the American Legion, the 40&8 and the Disabled American Veterans. He held many offices at American Legion Post 11 in Fairbanks, including Post Adjutant and Commander.

Glenn was preceded in death by his father, R. W. Willis; maternal grandparents, Matthew and Clara Mae Hester Morris; paternal grandparents, Wade and Ila Willis; an aunt and several uncles.

He is survived by his wife, Kristin Summerlin of Two Rivers, Alaska; daughter, Kristy Willis of Pevely, MO; two sons, Kristopher and Benjamin Willis of Jefferson, Ohio; his mother, Murline Morris Willis of Vidalia; and sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Jones Hart of Vidalia. He is survived by one granddaughter, Madison Slaton of Pevely, MO; two nephews, Ryan and Logan Hart of Vidalia; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home in Vidalia, the Rev. C.M Sheffield officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Glenn’s name to the Ft. Lewis Fisher House, 9999 Wilson Avenue, Ft. Lewis, WA 98433.

Mr. Homer Palmer, Jr., age 80 Vidalia, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after a brief illness. He was a native of Vidalia and lived many years in Macon, Orange Park, Florida, and Jacksonville, Florida. He lived in Mayo, Florida most of his life where he was the owner of Palmer Nursery. He returned to Vidalia in 2003, was a devout Christian, and formerly attended the Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Fern Gibbs Palmer, his father, Homer Palmer, Sr., a sister, Mildred Palmer Clegg, and a brother, Franklin Palmer.

Mr. Palmer is survived by his mother, Claudia Smith Palmer of Vidalia, and two nephews, Dr. Mark Clegg of Adel and Chris Clegg of Sylvester.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 30^th at 11:00 am in the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Norristown with Reverend David Knight officiating.

Pamela Harden Burkhalter, age 46 passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at her residence. The Lyons native had lived in Toombs County most of her life. She was a homemaker and is preceded in death by her father, William Harden and a brother, Joel Harden.

She is survived by her daughter, Carla Higgs of Collins. Mother and step-father, Faye and Jim McNair of Collins. Step-mother, Jenny Harden of Lyons. Brother, Randy Harden of Lyons. Sister, Teresa Cribbs of Midway. Half brother, Greg Harden of Lyons. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will begin at 6:00pm Friday, July 2, 2010 from the Reidsville Chapel.

Mr. Fannery “Floogie” Salter, age 85 of Vidalia, died Monday, June 28, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, a graduate of Berry High School in Rome, and a graduate of Vanderbilt University. He was a founding partner of Salter, Miller and McLain, and had been a certified public accountant since 1950. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World II and served in the European Theater. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia, and the Men’s Bible Class. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Page Salter in 1995.

Mr. Salter is survived by two daughters, Gail Roberts and Genia Crane and husband Will all of Marietta, one sister, Linda Veal and husband Jimmy of Brunswick, four grandchildren, Paige Roberts of Kennesaw; Katie Roberts of Atlanta; and Allison Crane and Shannon Crane both of Marietta, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 1^st at 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church of Vidalia with Reverend Bucky Kennedy, Ray Blount and Roy Herrington officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

Mr. James “Edward” McCoy, age 71 of Vidalia, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. He was a native of Wheeler County; also living in Montgomery County, but in Toombs County most of his life. He was a retired welder from Local 188 in Savannah; a U.S. Army Veteran stationed in Germany, attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Vidalia, and was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Lee McCoy and Sally Ryals McCoy.

Mr. McCoy is survived by his wife, Pat McCoy of Vidalia, one son, Allen McCoy and Kim of Vidalia, two daughters, Pam McCoy of Vidalia and Samantha McCoy of Richmond Hill, three sisters and brothers-in-law, Reba and Joe Gill of Inverness, Florida; Sue and John Mock of Brooksville, Florida; and Betty Ruth Young of Reedsburg, Wisconsin; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Jo McCoy of Richmond Hill; Gene and Geneva McCoy of St. George; and Bobby McCoy of Brooksville, Florida; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 30^th at 11:00 am in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Rick Wilson and Reverend Glenn Waters officiating. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Mrs. Nadine Pittman Eddinger, age 86 of the South Thompson Community, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 in the Bethany Nursing Center in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native of Toombs County; living in Jacksonville, Florida for thirty years, and retuned to Toombs County in the early 1980’s. She was the owner of Eddinger Livestock, and during World War II was an Army Medic stationed in Seattle, Washington. She attended the South Thompson Baptist Church and the Hardens Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Walker Pittman and Carrie Belle Burns Pittman, two sisters, Ossie Allen and Betty Kuhn, five brothers, Dr. Clifford Pittman, Clyde Pittman, Felton Pittman, Billy Pittman, and Richard Pittman.

Mrs. Eddinger is survived by three brothers, Jesse Pittman and wife Betty; Hoyt Pittman; and Broadus Pittman and wife Joyce all of the English Eddy Community, nieces Trelawney Palmer and Royce and Frances Labadie of Vidalia, great niece, Mallory Allen of South Thompson, great nephew, Senior Airman Lance Allen and wife Shanna of San Antonio, Texas, and numerous other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 26^th at 11:00 am in the Hardens Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Jarrell Lillard officiating. Interment will follow in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Debbie Moore Sharpton, age 55 of Mt. Vernon, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native Telfair County and moved to Mt. Vernon in 1973. She was a loan officer with Mt. Vernon Bank for fifteen years, and was employed with Heartland Academy in Mt. Vernon as a paraprofessional for ten years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class, and former choir member. She was preceded in death by her father, Herbert Eugene Moore, and four siblings. Debbie was active with the Montgomery County Relay for Life, enjoyed spending time with her family at their beach home in Sapelo Sound, and also enjoyed Solitaire and crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Sharpton is survived by her husband, Jimmy Sharpton, one daughter, Kim Sharpton Lawson and husband Jeffery, two sons, Jim Sharpton and wife Nancy and Scott Sharpton and wife Marie all of Mt. Vernon, her mother, Iris Moore, one sister, Sharon Pfliger and husband Jim, one brother, Herbie Moore and wife Benita all of McRae, five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 25^th at 11:00 am in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Carl Hay officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.

REIDSVILLE - James Kenneth Youngblood, 68, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at his home. The Montgomery County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. H e was a 1959 graduate of Montgomery County High School. He attended South Georgia College, transferring to Georgia Southern College where he obtained his degree in Criminal Justice in 1974. He was a Mason and a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia. He retired from the Georgia State Patrol and the Tattnall County Sheriff's Department with 34 years of service. He attended Pineview Baptist Church. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and their teammates participate in football, baseball and cheerleading at Pinewood Christian Academy. He was also an avid fan of UGA football. He was a native of Longview, Texas; moved to DeKalb, Texas as a child, and has resided in Vidalia since 1948. He was a 1955 Graduate of Vidalia High School, a 1960 Graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering, and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. In 1966 he graduated from Mercer University School of Law, LLB and soon after began his law career in Dublin; later he moved to Vidalia and started a private practice, and retired several years ago. He was a former member of the Georgia Bar Association, a member of the Historical Society, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Vidalia.

Mr. Broadfoot is survived by his wife, Liz Galbreath Broadfoot of Vidalia, one daughter, Hollie Leigh Broadfoot of Whippany, New Jersey, one sister, Judy Broadfoot Culbertson of Dallas, Texas, one brother, John William Broadfoot of Amarillo, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 21^st at 2:00 pm in the First United Methodist Church of Vidalia with Reverend Robert Green and Reverend James Scott officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

Johnson’s Corner Community -- Mrs. Vera N. Denmark Reynolds, age 78 of the Johnson’s Corner Community, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 in the Toombs Nursing Home in Lyons after an extended illness. She was a native of Toombs County, living in the Orlando, Florida area for forty years, and returned to Toombs County in 1996. She was a homemaker, a member of the Assembly of God in Apopka, Florida, and was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Reynolds, her daughter, Teresa Dozier, her parents, John Emmitt Denmark, and Winnie Partin Denmark, and seven siblings.

Mrs. Denmark is survived by two sisters, Edna Willis of Lyons and Tina “Tenny” Smith of Johnson’s Corner, two brothers, Eugene Denmark of Orange Park, Florida and John “Redeye” Denmark of Johnson’s Corner, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 2^nd at 4:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Jerriel Lillard officiating. Interment will follow in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

Mr. John L. “J.L” Carter, Sr., age 73 of Glennville and formerly of Vidalia, died Sunday, June 6, 2010 in the Candler Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness. He was a native of Appling County, moved to Toombs County in 1956, to Glennville in 1980, and returned to Toombs County in 2008. He retired after forty years from Hazlehurst Manufacturing in Vidalia, and Glennville Lingerie Manufacturing. He was a member of the Watermelon Creek Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class in Glennville. He was an avid sportsman, and was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Frankie Mae Carter, three sisters, Nancy Mae Taylor, Pauline Johnson, and Doris Bivsecker, and two brothers, Jack Carter and J.W. Carter.

Mr. Carter is survived by one daughter, Judy Rushing and husband Harrison of Vidalia, one son, John L. Carter, Jr. and wife Patrice of Baxley, two sisters, Frankie “Tootsie” Poore of Hazlehurst and Glenease Baughu of Ocala Florida, one brother, J.C. Carter and wife Pat of Hazlehurst, four grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Neal, Jason and wife Regina, Hunter, and Sunshine, three great-grandchildren, Mary Claire, Savannah, and Madaline, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 9th at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Miller and Reverend Dane Glisson officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Allmond is survived by one daughter, Wanda Daniel and her husband Joe of Lyons, two sons, Ronnie Williamson and his wife Teresa of Santa Claus and Deron Williamson of Lyons, two sisters, Bernice and her husband Jim of Warner Robins and Melba Lassen of Dearborn Height, Michigan, three grandchildren, Jennifer Cloud, Katelin Collier, and Colby Whitaker, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, June 7th at 11:00 am in the Fowler Cemetery with Reverend Thomas Barnard officiating near Lothair.

Ocala - Iris Moore Falcone, 80, a resident of Ocala since 1963, passed away at the Hospice Legacy House on Sunday, May 23, 2010 after a brave battle with cancer. Born in Lyons, Georgia on November 30, 1929, she was the epitome of a good wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She passes on her legacy of honesty, integrity, and a superior work ethic to her children and grandchildren, and will be remembered for her selflessness and good will towards others. She was preceded in death by her sister Verna Lou Blalock of Lyons, Georgia and her brother William P. Moore of Warner Robbins, Georgia. She is survived by her husband Leonard "Lennie" Falcone; her children Hilda (Ron) Grant, Sharon Falcone, David (Paige) Falcone (all of Ocala), and Yvonne (Alan) Hart of Ocklawaha; her grandchildren - her pride and joy - Shaun "Pebbles" Fulford of Ocala and Deidre "Dede" Hart of Ocklawaha; her beloved nieces Kathleen Steransky, Geraldine Johnson, and Bernadine White (all of Lyons, Georgia); her nephew Joey Falcone of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and her friend of 45 years, Betty Brown of Ocala.

VIDALIA, TOOMBS COUNTY, GEORGIA - Robert O. Foerster, Jr. passed away on May 29, 2010 in Vidalia, Georgia. He was born on January 28, 1917, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the son of Robert O. Foerster of Hamburg, Germany and Ewing Wendell of Murfreesboro. The family shortly thereafter moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he grew up. He attended Robert E. Lee High School and the University of Alabama. In 1936 he moved to New York where he embarked on a long career in the maritime industry. For five years he went to sea starting as a Deck Cadet and rising to the position of Chief Purser with Grace Line. He married Anne Hadvab, his wife of sixty years in 1940. In 1941 he was assigned as cargo manager and port superintendent to Valparaiso, Chile where he remained until 1946. He and Anne and their son then moved back to Jacksonville where he entered the family lumber business. Bob was called to active duty as a Lieutenant with the United States Navy during the Korean War. He rejoined Grace Line in 1957 serving in several executive positions in New York until 1966. From 1966 to 1969 he served as Vice-President of Pittston Stevedoring Corp., and from 1969 to 1973 as President of Consolidated Marine, Inc. in Los Angeles. He then became ViceðPresident of Operations of Maher Terminal, Inc. the largest marine terminal operator in the country. He remained with Maker until he and Anne retired in Hilton Head, South Carolina in 1985. After Anne passed away he moved to Vidalia, Georgia to be close to his son and his family. He was a member of the Vidalia Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club and the Meadows Memorial Hospital Medical Auxiliary (pink ladies). He was also very active with the Wellness Fitness Center. Bob is survived by his son, Robert O. Foerster, III, by his daughter-in-law, Sarah, and by two step-grandchildren., Jack and Alex Downie. In Jacksonville, he is survived by his brother, David W. Foerster and his wife Margaret. He has numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at the Vidalia Presbyterian Church on June 6, 2010 at 2;00 p.m. In lieu of flowers remembrances can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his name. Mrs.Christine Meadows Taylor, age 92, of LaGrange died on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at West Georgia Hospice.

Born on June 5, 1917, in Normantown, Georgia, she was the daughter of Jesse Cleveland Meadows and Florence Wilkes Meadows. She was educated in the public schools in Vidalia, Georgia and graduated from Vidalia High School in 1934. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and graduated from LaGrange College. She received a Masters Degree and a Sixth Year Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Georgia.

Mrs. Taylor taught school at Marvin Yancey High School in Tombs County, Georgia and at Harwell Avenue School in the LaGrange School System. She was the Visiting Teacher for the LaGrange School System and contributed to the founding of the School Social Workers Association of Georgia. She was selected as the LaGrange Lions Club Servant of the Year in 1981. She retired from the LaGrange School System in 1986.

Mrs. Taylor joined the First Baptist Church of Vidalia upon her profession of faith at the age of ten. She has been a member of the First Baptist Church of LaGrange since 1946 and was active in various ministries of the Church. She was a worker in and director of the Primary Two Children’s Sunday School Department for 31 years. She served as a Trustee of the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home from 1971 to 1976. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. At First Baptist, she was a member and participant in the Women’s Missionary Union, Merry Makers and the Bereavement Committee.

She participated in various civic and community activities to include being a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of LaGrange Woman’s Club where she served in various capacities to include President. She was also a member of the Roundtable Book Club and a charter member of the Pine Needle Garden Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1987 by her husband of 46 years, James W. Taylor, and by her brother, Dr. J.C. Meadows, Jr.

She is survived by her son, John Meadows Taylor and his wife, Bit; her daughter, Julia Wilkes Taylor, both of LaGrange; and her granddaughter, Julia Dean Taylor Cleaveland and her husband, Phil, of Atlanta. She is survived by her sister, Julia M. Frerichs and her husband, Dr. C.T. Frerichs, of Beatrice, Nebraska and numerous nieces and nephews. Additionally, she is survived by her two extraordinary and loving caregivers, Daisy Chapman and Mary Reese.

Funeral services will be held in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of LaGrange at 11:00 o’clock a.m. on Monday, April 26, 2010 with Reverend Malcolm Cole Davis and Reverend James Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in the Shadowlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Striffler Hamby Funeral Home in LaGrange on Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Cedar Crossing, Mr. Jack D. Williams, age 73 of the Cedar Crossing Community, died Sunday, May 23, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, and a 1954 Graduate of Toombs Central High School. He served in the Air National Guard for four years, was employed with the Georgia Power Company for twenty years, the owner/operator of Williams Brothers Produce in Lyons for thirty-five years, a school bus driver with Toombs County Board of Education for twenty-seven years, and was the recipient of several local and regional bus driving rodeo awards. He was a member of the Department of Family and Children Services Board of Directors, a member of the Toombs County Democratic Committee, and a former Lions Club member. He was Methodist, and was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny J. Williams and Cora Lee O’Neal Williams. He was a loving husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and also was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Glenda Williams of Cedar Crossing; three daughters, Laura D. (Tracy “Skip”) Clark of Cedar Crossing, Jeanne M. (Paul) Wright of Crystal River, Florida, and Leigh Ann (Lyndon) Amis of Washington, Georgia; two sisters, Pinky (Billy) Milligan of Cedar Crossing, and Johnnie Jean Branch of the Five Points Community; two brothers, Troy (Leola) Williams of Lyons, and Trenton (Louise) Williams of Cedar Crossing; five grandchildren, Nick Peterson, Britteny Blissett, Melissa Clark-Stopa, Ben Clark, and Blake Amis; one great-grandchild, Jackson Stopa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 26^th at 11:00 am in the Tabernacle Baptist Church with Reverend Bobby Thompson and Reverend Henry Dowd officiating. Interment will follow in the Sharpe Cemetery near Alston.

He was a native of Valdosta, growing up there, and entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed in Jacksonville, Florida at both the Gilman and Mayport Shipyards for twenty-five years. He moved to Toombs County in 1969, and worked with Sea Island Cotton Gin in Vidalia for twenty years and retired. He was a member of the St. Matthews Church of God, and was preceded in death by his parents, Will E. Knight and Etta Clark Knight.

Mr. Knight is survived by his wife of sixty years, Martha Nan Carter Knight of Lyons, three sons, Gene Knight of Lyons; Vance Knight of Uvalda; and Lloyd Knight of Nashville, Tennessee, two daughters, Elaine Coleman of Lyons; and Elizabeth Coward of Rock Hill, South Carolina, three sisters, Naomi Stancil, and Virginia Bishop of Jacksonville, Florida, and Connie Johnson of St. Simons, Island, thirteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

STATESBORO - Mr. Lamar O. Reddick, age 70, died Friday at his home. The Bulloch County native graduated from Portal High School in 1957 and was a 1960 graduate of Southern Polytechnic State University with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology . He worked as an engineer with the Georgia Department of Transportation from 1960 until 1963. He was a registered Land Surveyor in both Georgia and South Carolina and had been the owner of Reddick & Associates Land Surveying and Land Development Firm from 1963 until 2002. He was elected Bulloch County Surveyor and served for 44 years. He was a member of the Surveying & Mapping Society of Georgia, and had served as president of that organization, was a member of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, the National Association of County Surveyors, and was a Founder and Board Member of First Southern National Bank. Mr. Reddick was also a member and past president of the Statesboro Rotary Club, Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Southern University Housing Board, Distinguished 1906 Society of Georgia Southern University, Campaign Chair of "Day for Southern", volunteer for Ogeechee Technical College, and was a recipient of The Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award. He was an Ogeechee Area Hospice Board member for six years, was on the Committee to restore the Bulloch County Courthouse, the Airport Committee, the City/County Recreation Master Plan committee, and was a Scout Master for Weblos Group. He was an active member of Pittman Park United Methodist Church serving in many capacities including Chairman of the Board and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Lamar loved his God, his family, friends and his community. He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing golf, and was a loyal Georgia Southern University fan. Mr. Reddick was preceded in death by his parents, Garnett and Annie Laura Reddick, and a brother, Terrell Troy Reddick. Johnson’s Corner Community, Mr. Durwood Collins, age 62 of the Johnson’s Corner, died Friday, May 14, 2010 in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after a sudden illness. He was a native of Tattnall County, moved to Savannah, and was a 1966 graduate of Groves High School. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served on the Aircraft Carrier, USS Coral Sea for four years. In 1974 he worked at Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant in Appling County, and in 1978 he started at Plant Vogel in Waynesboro with eleven years of service. He worked thirteen years with the Georgia Department of Transportation as a field engineer in the Baxley office where he retired. He attended and supported the Edmond Chapel Church of God through his volunteer service for fifteen years of overseeing the winter monthly BBQ sandwich fundraiser. He was affectionately known as the “BBQ Man”, and was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his father, Monroe Collins, his step-father, Herbert Blaxton, and a sister, Patricia Ann Campbell

Mr. Collins is survived by his loving wife of thirty-nine years, Wanda Toole Collins of Johnson’s Corner, three daughters, Patty (Pete) Akridge of Stillmore; Shonda (James) Jackson; and Dawn (Jamie) Cauley all of Johnson’s Corner, his mother, Vondell Collins Blaxton of Johnson’s Corner, one sister, Brenda NeSmith, and Donnie (Barbara) Collins of Glenwood, three grandsons, Kyle Morris, T.J. Frank Robert Trautz, age 86, of Vidalia, died Thursday evening in the Meadows Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness. A native of Jersey City, New Jersey, he has resided in Toombs County most of his life. Mr. Trautz was a charter member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Vidalia, and also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Trautz served in the Army/Air Force in the European Theatre, receiving the American Service Medal, European/African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Trautz is survived by his wife Florence Trautz of Vidalia, two sons Scott Trautz (Jan) of Brunswick, Wayne Trautz of Vidalia; one daughter Cheryl Williams (Donnie) of Vidalia, one brother Edward Trautz (Stella) of Higgins Lake Michigan, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, May 17^th at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Ross officiating. Darrell Reynolds (January 11, 1964-May 11, 2010)

May 11, 2010-- Mr. Darrell Reynolds, age 46 of the Cedar Crossing Community, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010. He was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, except when he served in the U.S. Navy from 1984 until 1986. He was a 1982 Graduate of Toombs Central High School, and worked with Bob Jones Logging Company. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Reynolds.

Darrell is survived by his mother, Tommie Grace Reynolds of Cedar Crossing, one sister, Sharon (Gary) Reynolds of Alston, two brothers, Keith (Teresa) Reynolds and Kenneth (Vickie) Reynolds, all Cedar Crossing; three nieces, Jennifer, Tiffany, and Stephanie; one nephew, Brandon Reynolds all of Cedar Crossing; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 13^th at 2:00 pm in the Cedar Crossing Baptist Church with Reverend Reece Mincey officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedar Crossing Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 9:00. At the request of the family, memorial contributions may be made to Mrs. Tommie Grace Reynolds, 711 W.B. Braddock Road, Uvalda, GA 30473, to aid in funeral expenses incurred.

William Smith (“Smitty”) Snell, Sr., age 86 of Vidalia, died on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Community Hospice following an extended, courageous battle with cancer. “Smitty” was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Johnson Co., GA to the late William Marvin and Zelma Smith Snell. He later moved to Vidalia as an employee of the Southern Bell Telephone Co. from which he retired as Area Manager 42 years later. He also met his beloved wife Julia Mitchell Snell in Vidalia where they remained and began their family. He served in Patton’s Third Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. His reserve unit was recalled during the Korean War, and he served as an instructor in artillery signal at Fort Sill, OK. “Smitty” was an extremely active member of his community. He served as Mayor of Vidalia from 1986-1994 and was a Toombs County Commissioner from 1995-2000. He was a 60-year Mason, a Shriner, a 50-year Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. He was past Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O.E. (Vidalia Elks Lodge), Past President of the Vidalia Country Club, past member of the Vidalia City Schools Board of Education and in 1968 was chosen as the Vidalia Citizen of the Year. In addition, he was Past President of the Vidalia Lions Club and the Vidalia Chamber of Commerce. “Smitty’s” First United Methodist Church was also very important in his life. He was an active member and former teacher of the Men’s Bible Class, led numerous committees and boards, and was a Past District Lay Leader. He loved his church and was faithful in his attendance until his illness. His favorite pastimes were fishing at Lake Sinclair, watching the Atlanta Braves, drinking coffee with his friends at Hardee’s, relating stories, and sitting on the porch of the Snell lake house. “Smitty” was predeceased by his wife Julia Mitchell Snell and sister Catherine Snell West.

He is survived by his son William S. “Billy” Snell, Jr. (Melody); a daughter Julia Ann Snell McDonald (David Bowerman); grandchildren Karann Snell Raines (Jason); Craig Snell (Maggie) and Kara Luthi; one great-grandson Carson Lee Raines; one brother Jerry M. Snell (Dot) of Tampa, FL and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be on Monday, May 10^th at Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 PM.

The funeral service will be on Tuesday, May 11^th at 2:00 PM. at the Vidalia First United Methodist Church with the Reverends David Blalock and Robert Greene officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Jerry Snell, Jr., Charley Smith, Roger Kennedy, Jr., Tom Meredith, Wendell Dixon, Ronnie Dixon, Chip Matheson and Eddie Tyson.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Vidalia First United Methodist Church Men’s Bible Class, Jane Pickren, Frank and Pat Wilson.

Mt. Vernon, Mr. LeWayne “Pebo” Davis, age 49 of Mt. Vernon, died Saturday, May 8, 2010 from injuries received in an automobile accident near Alston. He was a native of Montgomery County, living there most of his life, and in Lumber City for thirteen years. He was the owner of Davis Construction Company, and attended the Lotts Creek Church of God. He loved his family and his career dearly.

Mr. Davis is survived by one son, Wayne R. Davis of Valdosta, three daughters, Jenna R. Davis of Lumber City; Alana Stanley and Marlana Stanley both of Lumber City, his parents, Leon and Marie Davis of Mt. Vernon, his mother, Cleopra Davis of Vidalia, two sisters, Joyce Carver of Vidalia; and Marie Conner of Soperton, two brothers, Irving Davis of McMinnville, Tennessee, six grandchildren, Hannah and Noah Davis, Matthew Foskey, Tyler and Bryan Dukes, and Jackson Smith, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Betty V. Kuhn, 77, died Saturday, May 1, 2010, at home with loved ones in Acworth after an extended illness.

She was born in Toombs County on Aug. 5, 1932, to John W. and Carrie Belle Pittman. She lived in Toombs County and then Savannah until she joined the USAF. She received the Good Conduct Medal and Soldier of the Month Award for her service. She then lived in Texas, California, Florida, Louisiana, Thailand, Virginia, Minnesota and had moved to Acworth three years ago, living with her daughter Karla Cooper.

She worked as a dental technician in the USAF, a crypto-operator and courier for OICC in Bangkok, Thailand, a data processor for US Navy at Indian Head Md., for the U.S. Postal Service in Uvalda and she owned and operated Kuhn's General Store in Toombs County.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 42 years, Lt. Col. Charles M. Kuhn USAF (ret.); sister, Ossie P. Allen, and brothers, Clifford, John "Clyde," Felton, Billy, Richard, and David Tye Pittman.

She is survived by daughters. Signe M. Anderson (Walter) of Glennville and Karla R. Cooper (Todd) of Acworth; eight grandchildren: Amber A. Oliver (Jason) of Montgomery, Ala., Wendy L. Houser (Tim), Strafford, Mo., Charles "Chuck" M. Cooper (Christine) of Auburn, Ala., Jonathan C. Cooper (Beth) of Syrmna, Tamara A. Wood (Tim) of Bartow, Fla., Billy Anderson (Tanika) of Walthourville, Bobby Anderson (Rhonda) of Hinesville and Hollis L. Hill (Sean) of Black Creek; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Nadine P. Eddinger of Lyons; brothers, Hoyt Pittman of Uvalda, Jesse (Betty) Pittman and Broadus (Joyce) Pittman, both of Lyons; brothers-in- laws, Richard Kuhn (Gloria) and Chris Kuhn (Marlene), both of Napa, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Margaret Pittman, Ruby Pittman, both of Lyons, Rita Pittman of Ootlewah, Tenn., Faye Pittman of Cordele, Carolyn K. Nelson of Napa and Margie K. Marks of Iron River, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be from 6-7 p.m. Friday, May 7. Family visitation and service will follow, 7-8 p.m. at The Cremation Society of the South in Marietta. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date.

Mr. John F. “Johnny” Clifton, age 60 of Ailey, died Friday, April 30, 2010 at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, and a 1967 Graduate of Montgomery County High School. He was a farmer for many years, and in 1981 was named “Man of the Year” in the Soil and Water Conservation Monthly. He was employed with Weyerhaeuser of Lyons for ten years, and was the Executive Director of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce for ten years. He was a member of the Higgston Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by his father, T.R. Clifton on April 9^th 2010.

Mr. Clifton is survived by his wife, Gloria Joseph Clifton of Ailey, three children, Candice Clifton and Derek Clifton of Savannah and Clay Clifton of Ailey, his mother, Mary C. Clifton of Ailey, his mother-in-law, Margaret Joseph, a sister-in-law, Darla Kicklighter of both of Glennville, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He loved and was loved by his friends and family.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 2^nd at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend David Blalock and Reverend Mark Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening beginning at 6:00 pm.

SAVANNAH - Mr. Annian Mowat Brand, III, 89, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at Community Hospice in Vidalia. Mr. Brand was born on December 17, 1920 in Savannah. He was the son of the late Annian M. Brand, Jr. and Ione Lennon Brand Poston. Following graduation from The Alexander School in North Carolina, Mr. Brand enlisted in the Army and served as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. After completing his military service, Mr. Brand returned to Savannah where he worked for the Central of Georgia and Southern Railway Systems as a Trainman until his retirement. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Mills Brand with whom he had five children. He is survived by his former wife, Sarah Brand of Vidalia, GA; three daughters, Dorothy Brand Rowe of New Bern, N.C., Betty Brand Moxley of Vidalia, GA, and Marguerette Brand Shackleford of Atlanta, GA; two sons, John Revere Brand of Covington, GA, and Joseph Edward Brand of Lawrenceville, GA; seven grandchildren, three great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Pamela Clifford Palmer, age 89 of Vidalia, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native of Notgrove, England, and taught school in Cold Aston, England. She met her husband during World War II, and they moved to his home in Vidalia in 1946. She was a former member of the Alston United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Palmer, a daughter, Anita McLain, her parents, George and Hillary Davis Clifford, a sister, Mona Head, and a brother, George Clifford. She was loving and wonderful wife and mother.

Mrs. Palmer is survived by three daughters, Diana Harrison of North Augusta, South Carolina; Cathy and Mike Whorton of Vidalia; and Caroline and Darrell Cooper of Lyons, one brother, D.W. Clifford of Salisbury, England, three grandchildren, Joseph McDaniel of North Augusta; Steve Harrison of Beech Island, South Carolina; and Rebecca Bolton of Lyons, three great-grandchildren, Wesley McDaniel, Heather Harrison, and Hunter Bolton, and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, April 29^th at 3:00 pm in the Pinecrest Cemetery with Reverend Ronald Rollins officiating.

Lyons,
Mr. Robert Leon “Poff” Garbutt, age 99 of Lyons, died Friday, April 23, 2010 at the home he was born in on December 18, 1910. He graduated from Georgia Military College, and attended Georgia Institute of Technology. He worked as a civil engineer in building the Savannah Civic Center, St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Southeastern Tech in Atlanta, and numerous other large construction projects. Mr. Garbutt retired in 1973 and lovingly volunteered his time and energy to build the church he was so devoted to, the Lyons First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Bob Garbutt in 2006, and his parents, George Allie and Ruby Smith Garbutt.

Mr. Garbutt is survived by his wife of seventy-seven years, Madeline O. Garbutt of Lyons, two daughters, Jesslyn Garbutt Ezell of Albany; and Jeannine Garbutt Rollins of Atlanta, a daughter-in-law, Sandra Perkinson Garbutt of Lyons, ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 26th at 12:00 pm in the Lyons First United Methodist Church, 103 East Wesley Avenue, with Reverend James Aycock and Reverend Owen Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Lyons City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00.

SAVANNAH, CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA - Claude Anderson, 92, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at home under the care of Hospice Savannah. Born in Toombs County, Georgia, Claude was the son of the late Wright and Minnie Anderson. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Arena during World War II. He was employed by Union Bag-Camp Paper Corp, later known as Union Camp Corp, as a papermaker until his retirement in 1980. He was an active member of Clayton P. Miller Methodist Church in Savannah for many years, and spent his later years at his beloved Cokesbury United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Club. Claude had an abounding love for gospel music; he sponsored and organized countless gospel sings locally, was well-known in gospel music circles in several states, and was honored by WTOC TV as "Hometown Hero" for his support of the gospel music ministry. He had a deep and abiding love for the Lord, sharing his faith through hospital and at-home visits to the sick, tending to others in need, keeping his family connected by reunions and get-togethers, and showing his wonderful sense of humor to all. He will be greatly missed. Claude was preceded in death by two loving wives, Reba Overstreet Anderson and Lucille Norton Anderson. He was also predeceased by his twin brother Clyde Anderson and other siblings Lucille Anderson Perry, Wilbur Anderson, Harris Anderson, and Nellie Anderson Hogan. He is survived by step-daughters and husbands Sandra and Rudy Barton and Alice and Kenneth DuBose of Savannah; grandsons Chris Barton and wife Hannah and Todd Barton; great-grandson Colby Barton. He is also survived by brothers and wives Sanford and Audrey Anderson and Gilbert and Dean Anderson of Lyons, Georgia and Garland Anderson of Davenport, Florida, as well as a large number of nieces and nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Harold Watson, age 62 of Mt. Vernon, died Saturday, April 17, 2010 in the Trinity Hospital in Augusta after an extended illness. He was a native of Montgomery County, and had resided in the Gracewood School and Hospital in Richmond Hill for the past forty-eight years. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Watson and a brother, T.A. Watson.

Mr. Watson is survived by his mother, Lucille "Lucy" Watson, one brother, Marvin (Betty) Watson, and a nephew, Stacy Watson all of Mt. Vernon, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 20th at 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon with Reverend Karl Hay officiating. Interment will follow in the Braddy Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

Mrs. Margaret Nadine Campbell, age 77 of Vidalia, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia after sudden illness. She was a native of Buchanan, Michigan, grew up in San Francisco, California, and had lived in Vidalia most of her life. She retired from TG&Y, and the Super Ten in Vidalia. She was a Pink Lady at Meadows Regional Medical Center for several years, an active member of the Smith Street Baptist Church in Vidalia since 1970, a member of the Maratha Sunday School Class and served on numerous committees, including Bereavement and the Bus Ministry.

Mrs. Campbell is survived by her husband, William T. Campbell of Vidalia, two daughters, June C. (John) Jones of Adrian; and Carol (Berry) Crosby of Hazlehurst, one son, William S. Campbell of Vidalia, one sister, Bobbie Hughes of Vidalia, one brother, Harold Knapp of York, Pennsylvania, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17^th at 10:00 am in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Chris Sheffield and Reverend Jimmy Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

He was a 1995 graduate of Claxton High School, where he played golf, basketball and ran cross-country. Jason served in the United States Navy for 4 years being stationed in Gaeta, Italy, and was presently serving in the Naval Reserve. He was a 2002 graduate of the Culinary Arts Institute of Florida. As much as he loved cooking, he also enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid Canoochee River fisherman and held an extraordinary love for golf. Jason was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Sidney and Shirley Strickland, his paternal grandparents, Jakie and Nelle Collins and an uncle, Frankie Strickland. LYONS, TOOMBS COUNTY, GEORGIA - Mr. George E. Smith, age 78, died April 11, 2010, at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, after an extended illness. He was a native of Fulton County. In his younger years, he was a Boy Scout and later became a Troop Leader. After graduating from Lyons High School, he attended Business College in Brunwick, for two years, and then attended Brewton Parker College, for two years. He then went to work with his father at City Tire and Battery Shop and remained there until he was called into the ministry and went to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and became ordained into the ministry in 1966. He then went to Altha Vista, Virginia, in ministry for a short period of time before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a very loving person setting a good example, and was an active member of Lyons First Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents George Glenn and Ida Elizabeth Thompson Smith. Survivors include 2 sisters Mrs. Jerry McRae of Lyons, and Mrs. Jackie Yarbrough of Guthrie Oklahoma, 1 nephew John McRae of Lyons, and 2 nieces Billie Jeanne Everett and Cheryl Downs both of Oklahoma. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Service for Mr. George Smith will be held Thursday, April 15, at 2:30 pm from First Baptist Church of Lyons with Reverend Dannie Williams officiating. LYONS, TOOMBS COUNTY, GEORGIA - Mr. Carlos Lee Price, 88, of Lyons, Georgia died April 10, 2010 in Palm Bay, Florida surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Price was born April 20, 1921 in Toombs County, Georgia, son of the late Jesse Cullen and Appie Price. He served in World War II and upon his honorable discharge, moved to Miami, Florida in 1947, where he resided for many years. Upon his return to Lyons, he built a home for himself and his wife of 56 years, Norma Wiggins Price, who preceded him in death in 1997. Mr. Price was a devoted family man whose priorities were to care for his wife and children always making sure their needs were met. Mr. Price was employed with Lindsley Lumber, Miami, Florida for 20 years and with Lark Builders, Lyons, Georgia for 20 years. He worked many years driving an 8-wheel truck, rising at 5:00 a.m., putting in a physically taxing day without complaint; rarely missing a day of work. Mr. Price was also an accomplished musician and licensed barber. Mr. Price is survived by and will be sorely missed by his children: daughters, Martha Sue Williams (George) of Cocoa, Florida and Sandra Jacobs (Harold) of Deltona, Florida. Five grandchildren: Angel Kaiser (Mike); Amber Jones (Kevin); Kathryn Bristol (Jim), George Williams (Kimye) and John Jacobs (Lourdes); 5 great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews; all of whom loved him dearly. Thomas R. “T.R.” Clifton, age 85 of Ailey, died Friday, April 9, 2010 at his home after a brief illness. He was a native of Toombs County and had lived in Montgomery County since 1947. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater of Operation. He was a retired farmer, was a director with ASCS Farm Service Agency for thirty-two years, and was a director with the Department of Family and Children Services in Montgomery County for thirty-four years and retired in 2005. He retired in 2008 as a director with Farm Bureau in Montgomery County after forty years. He was a member of the McGregor Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Lula Tomlin Clifton.

Mr. Clifton is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Mary C. Clifton of Ailey, one son, Johnny Clifton and wife, Gloria of Ailey, three grandchildren, Candice of Savannah; Derek of Pooler, and Clay of Ailey, two sisters, Louie Dean Osborne of Lyons; and Doris Fant of Vidalia, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 11th at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend David Blalock officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Moseley is survived by four daughters, Evelyn Nobles of Washington, Georgia; Edna R. O'Neal of Vidalia; Gloria Dismuke of Normantown; and Dianne Hattaway of Douglas, three sons, Robert Lee Moseley of Claxton; David Mosley of Houston, Texas; and Jimmy R. Mosley of Collins, two brothers, Lester Kight and Ernest Kight both of Metter, eighteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. REIDSVILLE, TATTNALL COUNTY, GEORGIA - Betty Barber Elders, age 86 passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the Community Hospice Inpatient Center in Vidalia. She was born April 17, 1923 in Hoosick Falls, New York to Harold and Kathryn Barber. Betty attended Troy Business College in Troy NY. and Georgia Teacher's College in Statesboro, GA. In February of 1944, Betty enlisted in the Navy WAVES, and served in the 6th Naval District Intelligence Office at both NAS, Jacksonville, FL. and Ft. Sumter, Charleston, SC. After the war ended, she settled in Reidsville, GA. and worked many years for Nelson Sales Company. Betty then transferred to Ft. Stewart, where she retired in 1979 from the Comptrollers Office. In 1969, she married Telford Elders. After the Elders both retired, they purchased a Winnebago Motor Home and joined the Winnebago International Traveler's Club as Charter members. From then on, their life was one of travel-all over North America, all of the United States, Canadian Provinces, and many Mexican states were visited. She was a past Co-President of Georgia Winnie Rebels, and the Bago Tribe. She organized the WIT Singer's Club in Forest City, Iowa. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, joining in 1944, past Matron of the Rising Star Chap 384, (no longer in existence), and a present Emeritus member of Martha Washington #300, of Claxton, GA. In 1950, she joined the Reidsville United Methodist Church and its Chancel Choir. She was also a member of the Tommy Thomson Sunday school class and Wesleyan Service Guild. She was a Charter member of Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, member of the VFW Auxiliary, a Pink Lady Volunteer of the Tattnall Community Hospital, a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. She was also a member of NARFE, GSC Botanical Garden Society, Red Hat Society, Tattnall County Historic Preservation Inc. and was a past president of the Reidsville Garden Club and a member of Team Reidsville. She was preceded in death by her husband Telford, and a son, Robert "Hal" Odum. She is survived by a daughter, D. Fleta Wood; son, T. Edwin Elders; grandchildren, Brittany Juarez, Sophia Schmidt, Solita Hayes, Telford Wood, Thomas Elders, and Teresa Elders-McCue; great-grandchildren, Haley, Kayla, Carlos, Stephen, Ashley, Regan, David, Layla, Esperanza, Rachel, Andrew, Katie and Alex; one special niece, Dale Scott. Memorial services will be conducted 4:00pm Saturday April 10, 2010 from the Reidsville United Methodist Church. Mr. Gerald M. Tootle, age 63 of Vidalia, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at his home after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Toombs and Montgomery Counties. He formerly was a carpenter, floor covering installer, and over the road truck driver. He worked eleven years with the Montgomery County Board of Education as a school bus driver and in the maintenance department. He was Baptist by faith, and was preceded in death by his parents Buster and Alpha Denton Tootle and a brother, William Donnell Tootle.

Mr. Tootle is survived by his wife, Cherry Tootle of Vidalia, one son, Michael Shane Tootle (Rachel) Bowen of Soperton, three daughters, Julie (Rex) Dopson, Cindy (Sambo) Boone, and Vickie (Randy) Gould all of Jacksonville, Florida, four sisters, Shelby Williamson, and Shirley Helms of Vidalia, Jean Bryant of Lyons, and Louise Hadden of Swainsboro, two brothers, Noel Tootle of South Carolina and Author Darrell Tootle of Vidalia, ten grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

SAVANNAH - Joseph Conrad Bland, 76, died December 30, 2009, at Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, Delaware, following a long-term battle with heart disease. Joseph was born on March 29, 1933, to Marcellus and Ruth Bland in Savannah, Georgia. He graduated high school and completed three years of college. He served in the U.S. Army, Korean War. He previously lived in Savannah, GA, Detroit, MI and Philadelphia, PA before moving to the Delaware area in 2008 to live with his son. He retired from Ford Motor Company, Romeo Tractor Plant as a Production Control Analyst after working at both the Philadelphia and Detroit Post Offices. Joseph enjoyed golfing and swimming. While residing in the Delaware area, he joined Crossroads Christian Church, Dover, Delaware. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, two brothers, Marcellus Bland, Jr. and James Bland, two sisters, Virginia (Ralph) Johnson and Elizabeth White, a daughter, Renee Darcel Bland. He leaves to mourn a son, Eric Conrad Bland, a granddaughter, Lauri Michelle Bland, a great granddaughter, Janelle Laurian Thomas, nieces, nephews, cousins, a devoted friend, Jessie Cooper and a host of family and friends. SAVANNAH - Mathilde Howard Buck, 91, passed away, Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness. Born November 20, 1918 in Columbia, South Carolina to John Rufus Howard and Marguerite Paschal Howard. They moved to Savannah in 1919. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, The Pape School, and Saint Mary's in Raleigh, N.C. She was wed to Robert Dudley Buck on February 14, 1948 in the Our Lady‰Ûªs chapel of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. In 1951 Union Camp took them to Forrest Hills, NY and then to Mountain Lakes, New Jersey until their return to Savannah in 1973. She was an active member of the Landings Ladies Golf Association, a great bowler, and an avid bridge player with her Union Camp Bridge Club for over 60 years. She played in two other bridge groups and substituted in a fourth. She also loved water aerobics. She traveled extensively and truly saw the world. She was a devout catholic and communicant of Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. She was a long time member of the Savannah Yacht Club. She is survived by her son, Robert V.D. Evans, Jr. (Barbara), a daughter, Victoria Boykin Buck, her grandchildren Robert (Trey) V. D. Evans III (Deborah) of Savannah, GA. and Mathilde Evans Finke (Sean) of Buford, GA. , her three great-grandchildren, Robert (Van)V.D. Mr. Clarkson was born in Cincinnati, OH on May 2, 1929, the son of the late George Buchanan and Dorothea Mae Mendenhall Clarkson. He was a graduate of Miami University of Oxford, OH. George was a veteran of the United States Army and was a retired Business Executive of Continental Field Machining. He had been a resident of Wilmington Island since 1979 when he and his family moved from Arlington Heights, IL. He was known for his love of gardening and landscape design and was active in the Master Gardeners Association. Mr. Clarkson was preceded in death by his daughter, Melanie Clarkson of Pasadena, CA. Dr. Martha Lee Bozeman Fay "Bill"/"Billie"/"Willie"/Martha/ "Dr. Fay" -

SAVANNAH - Martha B. Fay, Ph.D., 96, died peacefully on December 19, 2009 at Hospice Savannah of multiple old-age related problems. Born on November 18, 1913 in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, she was the second child of the late Virgil Fackney Bozeman, Sr. and Ethel Lee O'Roark Bozeman. She was predeceased by her brother Virgil Fackney Bozeman, Jr. of Moline, IL and her sister Mary Frances "Prontz" Bozeman Janavitz of Pittsburgh, PA and later Tucson, AZ. She was a graduate of Moline High School (1931) and of Rockford College, Rockford, IL (1935). She received a Ph.D. in Zoology from University of Illinois with a specialty in genetics (1945). Her first professional positions were in the field of genetics. She married Dr. Richard William Fay (1912-1972) at the Unitarian Church in Philadelphia, PA on September 19, 1941. Richard, an entomologist in the U. S. Public Health Service in Jefferson City, MO (1942-44), was transferred to Savannah, GA in 1944. During their years in Savannah, their home in Gordonston (1954-2006), was the focal point where their three children Mary, Bill, and Libby grew and prospered. In 1954, Martha experienced four months of "single" motherhood, while her husband Richard served with the World Health Organization [WHO] in Egypt. From 1959 to 1961, the entire family moved to Geneva, Switzerland, when Richard was posted there. Martha survived using her 25-year old college French, while her children studied in French in the Swiss public schools. Returning to Savannah in the summer of 1961, she became the primary caregiver for her mother-in-law, Jeanne Louise Wuillemen Fay (1961), of her husband's aunt, Marguerite Adele Wuillemen Schultz (1961-67), and of her husband (1969-72). Dr. Fay taught Science at Armstrong Junior College (now Armstrong Atlantic State University) (1944-49). From 1949 to 1984, with the aid of her trusty housekeeper, Mrs. Inez Jackson, while her children were growing up, she was involved in many community activities beginning as a Brownie Scout leader and PTA memberships. She served on the boards of many organizations, including Girl Scouts of America, Family Counseling Center, Traveler's Aid, United Way of Savannah, American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, and the Interfaith Interracial Committee. Dr. Fay was the Project Administrator of the Child Evaluation Center (1977-82). She was elected as a member of the Savannah Chatham County Board of Education (1975-86) and as its President (1987-91). She served on the Chatham County Board of Health (1984-2008). The last three years of her life were spent at Savannah Square Retirement Community in Savannah. Her older daughter oversaw this move, making her "cottage" into a pleasant residence for her mother. Her final move to Candler-St. Joseph Hospital occurred on December 13, 2009. Martha was an avid reader with wide interests ranging from mystery stories to genetics advances. Her Gordonston home garden contained 2 spectacular live oak trees, many tree camellias, and 60-year-old crape myrtles. She knitted many presents for family members. She led a very active social life. She received many honors during her long life, including her induction as the first female Diplomate as a Ph.D. Medical Geneticist of the American Society for Human Genetics (1982), the Clara Barton Sisterhood Award of the Unitarian Universalist Church (1993), and the Tony Buttimer Award from the Georgia Democratic Party (2002). In 2008, the crowning jewel was the renaming of the Chatham County Health Department after her. The honor was kept a complete secret from her until the actual ceremony, and when the curtain covering the wall of the building was pulled aside, she was totally surprised at both the honor and the praise of those attending. Martha gave many school, public, and church lectures on a variety of topics. As a board-certified medical geneticist, she insured that communications in matters of genetics counseling between physicians, patients, and their families resulted in patients achieving their full potential. Over the years, Martha hosted a variety of foreign visitors to Savannah - African, Asian, and European medical personnel, foreign exchange students, and Tibetan monks. Martha attended the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah from 1965 until her death, holding almost every position on the Board of Trustees except treasurer, and contributing to almost every committee of the church. She is survived by her three children, Mary Jacqueline Fay Nelson of Bowie, MD, William Martin "Bill" Fay of Athens, GA, and Elizabeth Adele "Libby" Fay of Lakewood, CO; by 3 grandsons, Richard William Fay, John Martin Fay, and Harrison Kimball Fay, all of Athens, GA; by her sister-in-law Mrs. Jeanne S. Bozeman of Naples, FL; by three nieces, Mrs. Anya Bozeman Taylor of Nyack, NY, Mrs. Carol Bozeman Hunt of Naples, FL, and Mrs. Gloria Janavitz of Pittsburgh, PA; and by two nephews, Rev. Virgil Fackney Bozeman III of Augusta, ME and Mr. David Bozeman of Willowbrook, IL. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery. SAVANNAH - James Joyce Humphries, 92, of Savannah, Georgia, widower of Ruth Stevens Humphries, died Thursday evening, January 14, 2010, at Marsh Haven Senior Living. Born on May 4, 1917, in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Charles C. Christie of Savannah, Georgia, and the late Marie Joyce Humphries of Savannah, Georgia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the step-son of the late Bert Humphries of Philadelphia. Mr. Humphries was a communicant of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and served in the United States Navy as an Ensign during World War II. He was a proud graduate of Malvern Preparatory School in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Mr. Humphries retired as a sales representative for Kramer Chemical Corporation in Camden, New Jersey. He returned to Savannah to retire at The Landings on Skidaway Island in 1985. Mr. Humphries was a lifelong avid golfer and political pundant who fiercely argued his positions. Until recent eye failure he would read until sunrise on a regular basis. Surviving are a cousin, William Lord of Sylvania, Georgia; a niece, Jane Senft of Spring City, Pennsylvania; cousins, Harriet Killorin of Tybee Island, Georgia and Suzanne Newell Laffredo of Florence, Italy, and a longtime close family friend, Maureen Tobin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. SAVANNAH - Frances Elizabeth Lambeth Maxey, 88, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 15, 2010. She was the daughter of the late Myrtis Poss and Charles Thomas Lambeth. She was born April 29, 1921 in Maxey's, Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Frances loved being a mother to her children, grandchildren, and great-grands. She taught Sunday School for many years to teenagers at Inman Park Baptist Church and the ladies in Willing Workers Class at Indian Creek Baptist Church, Stone Mountain, Georgia. She and her husband moved to Atlanta in 1940 and raised their family. Five years ago she moved to Savannah and resided at Marsh View Senior Living. She enjoyed her friends at Marsh View and loved reading the many books brought to her by the Live Oak Library staff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Watson Maxey, Sr., and son Sam Maxey, Jr., her brothers, Charles Lambeth and his wife, Ann, David Lambeth and his wife Sara, Joe Lambeth, and sisters, Olga Bell and her husband, George, and Kathleen Maxey and her husband, Dolph.
