Mr. Johnson was born on October 22, 1950 in Dublin, Georgia and grew up in Kite, Johnson County, Georgia. He was the son of the late John Riley and Lila Averett Johnson. Mr. Johnson retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer with 22 years of service and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Johnson passed away Friday, January 8, 2010 at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center after a valiant and courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Johnson is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Deborah Potts Johnson of Summerville, his son Jimmy Joe (Angie) Johnson of Conway, SC, his daughters Jessica Johnson (Reed) Goldberg of Medical Lake, Washington, Shelley Nicole Johnson of the home, 2 sisters Janette (Larry) Beasley of Bartow GA., Lennis (Ruskin) Powell, Swainsboro, GA, 2 brothers Raiford (Sherrie) Johnson of Garfield, GA, Jimmy (Deborah) Johnson of Kite, GA. SAVANNAH - Ruth P. "Dickie" Liles, 77, died Saturday, January 9, 2010 t St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, Georgia after a brief illness. Mrs. Liles was born in Walterboro, South Carolina on March 22, 1932 the daughter of the late Hubert and Eloise Leybourne Padgett. She was raised in Brunswick, Georgia and was a graduate of Glynn Academy where she excelled in basketball. Shortly after graduating she married Jack S. Liles. She and Mr. Liles traveled extensively during his career, residing in Virginia Beach, Virginia from 1963 - 1990 where Mr. Liles ultimately retired as President of Tidewater Construction Corporation. They retired to The Landings in Savannah, Georgia in 1990 where Dickie enjoyed playing golf and acquiring new friends. Her generous smile and vigor of life could light up a room. She always celebrated life to the fullest and that enthusiasm was contagious to anyone in her presence. It was always a pleasure to be in her company. Dickie could be described as a strong woman, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. She used this strength for the betterment of others, being civically involved in many projects and activities during her life. While living in Savannah she was affiliated with the Open Arms Group and Meals on Wheels as well as many other philanthropic groups. She enjoyed working in her beautiful yard and watching the birds that came to her feeder. Her greatest attribute was the love and devotion that she bestowed upon her family. Words cannot describe the love that she unselfishly gave to her family, always keeping their interest in mind before herself. Mrs. Liles is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Jack S. Liles, Sr.; children, Jenna Byrne and husband William of Willits, California, Jack S. Liles, Jr. and wife Deborah of Norfolk, Virginia, Richard Liles and wife Susan of Florence, South Carolina and Laura Liles Marshall of Savannah, Georgia; grandchildren, Dove Byrne, Colin Byrne, Jason Liles, Megan Liles, Zachary Liles, Rachel Liles, Emma Marshall, Claudia Marshall and Julia Marshall; great-grandchild, Ryko Byrne; brothers-in-law, John Richardson Liles of Virginia Beach, Virginia and William Hudson of West River, Maryland; sisters-in-law, Catherine Liles Long of Greensboro, North Carolina, Sarah Liles Suiter of Charlotte, North Carolina and Jane Perry Liles of Concord, North Carolina and a host of extended family, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Mrs. Willis is survived by her husband, Alan of Normantown, one daughter, Lisa (Shannon) Rewis of Vidalia, one son, Junior (Wendie) of Metter, her mother, Jessie Mae Vaughn Westberry, one sister, Dianne Vaughn of Vidalia, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews of Toombs, Emanuel and Chandler Counties.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 12^th at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Danny Zorn officiating. Internment will follow in the Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Duane Mitchell, age 46 of Vidalia, died Saturday, January 2, 2009 at his residence after an extended illness. He was a native of St. Petersburg, Florida, and was a 1981 graduate of Hanahan High School in Charleston, South Carolina. He was in the banking industry a computer analyst with HSBC in Manhattan, New York and lived there for fifteen years. He moved to Vidalia in 2004, attended the Vidalia Church of God and was preceded in death by his father, Reverend Joseph Mitchell in 1999.

He is survived by his mother, Florence E. Mitchell of Vidalia, one brother, Tony and Deonna Mitchell of Alston, six nieces and nephews, Kristin Brantley of Lyons; Chelsea Mitchell of Vidalia; Erica Miller of Alston; Mason Mitchell of Vidalia; Emily Miller of Alston; and Kayla Miller of Alston, several aunts and uncles also survive.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 7^th at 6:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Joe Q. Smith officiating

Deputies recover body of missing duck hunter in Altamaha River

The couple's vessel hit a floating log in the Altamaha and capsized.

BRUNSWICK - A Baxley couple's duck-hunting trip ended tragically on the Altamaha River.

Appling County sheriff's deputies recovered the body of Archie Courson, 32, shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday a few hundred yards from where he and his girlfriend, Gwen Spell, were thrown overboard when their boat capsized Tuesday afternoon, Chief Deputy Lee J. Sweat said.

It appeared Courson died from exposure or drowned. An autopsy will be performed today at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation laboratory in Savannah, Sweat said.

Deputies rescued Spell, 34, shortly after midnight after finding her clinging to a submerged tree stump where she had spent about nine hours in the frigid water. She was found upstream from Deen's Landing.

Suffering from hypothermia, Spell was taken to Appling Healthcare System's hospital in Baxley, Sweat said.

Spell was listed in stable but guarded condition Wednesday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The water temperature of the river was about 35 degrees overnight Tuesday, authorities estimated.

The couple were dressed in winter clothing and wearing life vests when they launched their boat from Deen's Landing to go duck hunting about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"They hit a log floating in the river and their boat capsized, throwing both of them into the water," Sweat said.

Spell managed to make it to the stump, but Courson was carried away by the current. When the couple didn't return by 5 p.m., family members went to the landing and found their parked truck and empty boat trailer.

Sweat said relatives reported the couple to the Sheriff's Office about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday triggering a boat search involving about 100 people including volunteers, sheriff's deputies, emergency personnel from Appling, Jeff Davis and Toombs counties and Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers.

After locating Spell, searchers kept looking for Courson but suspended the search about 2 a.m. because of darkness and dangerous conditions on the river. They resumed the search at dawn, and DNR rangers located Courson's body near a log in the water, authorities said.

RICHMOND, VA - William J. Cowart, died at home in Richmond, VA on Thursday, January 7, 2010. He was born in Ludowici, GA on July 3, 1936 to William M. and Alta Mae Bacon Cowart. He had lived in Virginia for over 40 years. Mr. Cowart was a graduate of Ludowici High School and the University of Georgia. He and longtime partner, Edgar Broome, owned and operated Mayberry Ice Cream Shops in the Richmond area as well as a pet store. William retired from Joseph A. Banks. He was also an Army veteran and member of the Chester Baptist Church. Mr. Cowart is survived by one sister, Alta C. Howard of Ludowici, GA; and two brothers, David G. For the past nine years she has resided in St. Simons and Brunswick.

Mrs. Crockett is survived by two daughters, Gail C. Harris and son-in-law, Jimmy of Vidalia and Janie C. Alexander and son-in-law, Fred of Brunswick, seven grandchildren, Anne Banks of Newberry, South Carolina; Jeanne Williamson of Brunswick; Lisa Woodman of Eatonton; Melanie Parker of Brunswick; Amanda Tate of St. Simons; Tris Strickland of Guyton and Russ Alexander of Miami, Florida, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and nephew, Steve Roderick of Dallas, Texas, and six special caregivers, Brenda, Minnie, Gale, Ophelia, Wanda and “B.B.”.

He was a lifetime member of the Board of Directors of the Emanuel County Farm Bureau, lifelong member of the Marietta Freewill Baptist Church serving as Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Findley in 2009.

Mr. Findley is survived by two sons, Mark and LaRee Findley and Terry and Linda Findley all of Lyons, one sister, Frances and Charles Parkerson of Eastman, five grandchildren, Kyle, Carmen and Dusty Findley, Stephanie Hattaway and Jessica Smith, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Kay Slagel - SAVANNAH - Barbara Kay Slagel passed away on January 7, 2010 in Savannah, Georgia at the age of 71. The eldest daughter of the late Ray and Gertrude Schoening, she was born on August 29, 1938 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. After attending public schools in Kalamazoo, she earned a BS degree in Pharmacy from the University of Michigan. While there, she was nominated to become a member of the Circle Honor Society and Lambda Kappa Sigma. She practiced Pharmacy in Michigan at the University of Michigan Health Center and at the Carle Clinic in Urbana, Illinois. Barbara was the beloved wife of Dr. Robert Slagel. Early married years were spent together at the University of Illinois, where Bob earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry. They began their family in Burnsville, Minnesota before moving to Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania. Barbara was a loving and fabulous homemaker, cook, and mother to her two children, Deborah and David. She was always involved in their activities and served as a Girl Scout Leader. She went on to become a very attentive and much loved Grandmother. The family moved to Savannah and settled at The Landings on Skidaway Island in 1979 when Bob joined the Union Camp Corporation. In 1988, Bob's job took them to Sparta, New Jersey and then England before his retirement from Union Camp in 1996 brought them back to their beloved friends and family in Savannah. Her family has always been very proud of Barbara's generous heart and gift for gathering friendships deep and strong wherever life took her. Barbara was an active member of each community they joined. She and Bob were always involved in church, singing in the choir and playing handbells. In 1966, she became a charter member of Chapter DP of P.E.O. in Burnsville, MN, solidifying a lifelong bond with that organization. She served as president and treasurer of P.E.O. local Chapter S. In Savannah, she was a member of the Landings Club and enjoyed her years playing team tennis before moving on to golf in later life. Barbara was an avid game player, loving bridge. As early members of Skidaway Presbyterian Church, She and Bob have been keenly committed to their church family. Barbara for many years directed the handbell choir in addition to other duties. She was a former volunteer at Candler Hospital and buyer for the gift shop and was most recently a volunteer at Savannah Medbank and active with the Savannah Friends of Music puppet program. In the last few years, Orchids were a passion, and she had joined the Deep South Orchid Society. Surviving Barbara are her husband of 48 years, Robert Slagel; Daughter Deborah Wilber (Todd) and their children, Sean and Christopher Kruchten and Gabrielle Wilber of Warrenton, Virginia; Son David Slagel (Katherine) and their children, Elizabeth and Emily of Richmond Hill, Georgia; a sister Christeen Causey and her husband Jim of Plymouth, IN; a niece Sandy Garrison and her family of Plymouth, IN; a nephew Michael Causey and his family of The Woodlands, TX; and several dear cousins and extended family members. A Savannah man was fatally crushed Wednesday afternoon by several logs that rolled off an overturned trailer pulled by a speeding truck.

Garden City police were called to the intersection of U.S. 80 and Alfred Street about 1 p.m. Wednesday on reports of the payload from a log truck crushing a man who tried to cross the road on foot. Officers arrived to find the man - who remained unidentified Wednesday night - dead at the scene.

Investigators determined the truck was headed east on U.S. 80 at a high rate of speed and made a right turn onto Alfred. Meanwhile, the pedestrian tried to get out of the truck's path, said Garden City Police Chief David Lyons.

The truck itself made the turn, but its trailer detached and overturned, Lyons said.

"If the load hadn't shifted, he probably would have been able to get out of the way all right," he said. "But with the load shifting, he didn't make it."

The accident closed U.S. 80 until 4:45 p.m., said Garden City Sgt. Benji Selph.

The incident was a grim example of what can happen if something goes wrong with the several trucks carelessly crossing the intersection every day, said Patrick Patel, owner of Kwik Way Foods.

Patel said he heard the thunderous sound of metal and logs crashing to the ground while tending to customers Wednesday. His store is located at the same intersection where the crash occurred.

Although police have been seen aggressively enforcing traffic laws on U.S. 80, Patel said he has watched countless truck drivers disobey the law.

"They'll come down that hill and won't even stop," Patel said, pointing to a slope west of the intersection. "They'll honk their horn and think that's OK."

Garden City Police Cpl. Kyle Malin was called to the scene as one of two officers responsible for enforcing safety compliances on commercial vehicles. Malin said he found several major violations on the log truck, including a faulty fifth wheel - where the trailer attaches to the truck - and balding tires.

Investigators said the truck may have gone into the oncoming lanes of traffic. Also, the truck may have run a red light, Malin said.

The identity of the Vidalia, truck driver was withheld.

Malin said since launching a commercial vehicle safety campaign in July 2008 he has seen a decrease in the number of commercial vehicles shut down because of disrepair.

But the number of dangerous commercial vehicles still is high, he added.

"It comes to a point where you're not going to catch all of them - that's why we have the stringent enforcement we do," he said. "For every 10 we inspect, there another three or four that are not in working condition."

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A log truck traveling eastbound on Highway 80 turned over and killed a pedestrian.

The log truck was turning right onto Alfred Street when the fifth wheel broke. The truck tipped onto its side, spilling its cargo onto the roadway.

At that moment, a pedestrian crossing the road was caught in the wreckage. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

U.S. 80 between Chatham Parkway and Alfred Street is now open after a pedestrian was crushed by the payload of an overturned log truck, Garden City police officials said.

The pedestrian was in a crosswalk on Alfred about 1 p.m. when the truck turned left from U.S. 80, according to police. The truck's trailer became detached and a load of logs spilled onto the roadway, police said.

The load struck the man and a tractor trailer turning left onto U.S. 80 from Alfred Street, said Garden City Chief David Lyons.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We pretty much got the road shut down,” Lyons said. “It’s going to take a while to get this cleared up.”

The roadway reopened at 4:45 p.m., in time for rush hour.

Safety breaches surface in fatal log-truck wreck

Garden City police investigators found 24 safety violations on a log truck that lost its payload last week and fatally crushed a pedestrian.

The wreck happened about 1 p.m. Wednesday as Neal James Hamilton, 57, traversed a crosswalk on U.S. 80 at Alfred Street, according to Garden City police.

The eastbound truck, driven by Daniel Morris of Uvalda, Ga., swerved south as it neared the intersection, dislodging its trailer of logs. Hamilton, of Lansing, Mich., was unable to dodge the tumbling timber.

Garden City police Sgt. Benji Selph said after the accident investigators spotted a litany of safety breaches on the truck.

They included light violations, faulty brakes, balding tires and missing trailer axle parts. The fifth wheel - where the trailer was attached to the truck - had been welded together and snapped during the wreck, according to police. The logs, Selph added, were not strapped down adequately.

"He didn't have the right amount of straps for the amount" of logs, Selph said. The cargo weighed at least 60,000 pounds, police said.

Charges against Morris, 29, were pending Tuesday.

Garden City Police Chief David Lyons said the fatal wreck underscores the importance of the department's commercial vehicle unit, which inspects trucks and issues safety citations. He said inspections are aimed at ridding the roads of relics, not harassing truckers or collecting fines.

The log truck involved in last week's wreck, Lyons said, "is exactly the kind of truck we're looking for - trucks that are totally unsafe - and we stop trucks like that every day."

The police chief added: "Unfortunately, we didn't catch this one until it was too late."
