VIDALIA, TOOMBS COUNTY, GEORGIA - Robert O. Foerster, Jr. passed away on May 29, 2010 in Vidalia, Georgia. He was born on January 28, 1917, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the son of Robert O. Foerster of Hamburg, Germany and Ewing Wendell of Murfreesboro. The family shortly thereafter moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he grew up. He attended Robert E. Lee High School and the University of Alabama. In 1936 he moved to New York where he embarked on a long career in the maritime industry. For five years he went to sea starting as a Deck Cadet and rising to the position of Chief Purser with Grace Line. He married Anne Hadvab, his wife of sixty years in 1940. In 1941 he was assigned as cargo manager and port superintendent to Valparaiso, Chile where he remained until 1946. He and Anne and their son then moved back to Jacksonville where he entered the family lumber business. Bob was called to active duty as a Lieutenant with the United States Navy during the Korean War. He rejoined Grace Line in 1957 serving in several executive positions in New York until 1966. From 1966 to 1969 he served as Vice-President of Pittston Stevedoring Corp., and from 1969 to 1973 as President of Consolidated Marine, Inc. in Los Angeles. He then became ViceðPresident of Operations of Maher Terminal, Inc. the largest marine terminal operator in the country. He remained with Maker until he and Anne retired in Hilton Head, South Carolina in 1985. After Anne passed away he moved to Vidalia, Georgia to be close to his son and his family. He was a member of the Vidalia Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club and the Meadows Memorial Hospital Medical Auxiliary (pink ladies). He was also very active with the Wellness Fitness Center. Bob is survived by his son, Robert O. Foerster, III, by his daughter-in-law, Sarah, and by two step-grandchildren., Jack and Alex Downie. In Jacksonville, he is survived by his brother, David W. Foerster and his wife Margaret. He has numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at the Vidalia Presbyterian Church on June 6, 2010 at 2;00 p.m. In lieu of flowers remembrances can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his name. Mrs.Christine Meadows Taylor, age 92, of LaGrange died on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at West Georgia Hospice.

Born on June 5, 1917, in Normantown, Georgia, she was the daughter of Jesse Cleveland Meadows and Florence Wilkes Meadows. She was educated in the public schools in Vidalia, Georgia and graduated from Vidalia High School in 1934. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and graduated from LaGrange College. She received a Masters Degree and a Sixth Year Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Georgia.

Mrs. Taylor taught school at Marvin Yancey High School in Tombs County, Georgia and at Harwell Avenue School in the LaGrange School System. She was the Visiting Teacher for the LaGrange School System and contributed to the founding of the School Social Workers Association of Georgia. She was selected as the LaGrange Lions Club Servant of the Year in 1981. She retired from the LaGrange School System in 1986.

Mrs. Taylor joined the First Baptist Church of Vidalia upon her profession of faith at the age of ten. She has been a member of the First Baptist Church of LaGrange since 1946 and was active in various ministries of the Church. She was a worker in and director of the Primary Two Children’s Sunday School Department for 31 years. She served as a Trustee of the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home from 1971 to 1976. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. At First Baptist, she was a member and participant in the Women’s Missionary Union, Merry Makers and the Bereavement Committee.

She participated in various civic and community activities to include being a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of LaGrange Woman’s Club where she served in various capacities to include President. She was also a member of the Roundtable Book Club and a charter member of the Pine Needle Garden Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1987 by her husband of 46 years, James W. Taylor, and by her brother, Dr. J.C. Meadows, Jr.

She is survived by her son, John Meadows Taylor and his wife, Bit; her daughter, Julia Wilkes Taylor, both of LaGrange; and her granddaughter, Julia Dean Taylor Cleaveland and her husband, Phil, of Atlanta. She is survived by her sister, Julia M. Frerichs and her husband, Dr. C.T. Frerichs, of Beatrice, Nebraska and numerous nieces and nephews. Additionally, she is survived by her two extraordinary and loving caregivers, Daisy Chapman and Mary Reese.

Funeral services will be held in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of LaGrange at 11:00 o’clock a.m. on Monday, April 26, 2010 with Reverend Malcolm Cole Davis and Reverend James Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in the Shadowlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Striffler Hamby Funeral Home in LaGrange on Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Flowers will be accepted. However, it is the request of the family that donations be made to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, P. O. Box 329, Palmetto, Georgia 30268 or to West Georgia Hospice, 1510 Vernon Road, LaGrange, Georgia 30240 in her memory.

Cedar Crossing, Mr. Jack D. Williams, age 73 of the Cedar Crossing Community, died Sunday, May 23, 2010 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, and a 1954 Graduate of Toombs Central High School. He served in the Air National Guard for four years, was employed with the Georgia Power Company for twenty years, the owner/operator of Williams Brothers Produce in Lyons for thirty-five years, a school bus driver with Toombs County Board of Education for twenty-seven years, and was the recipient of several local and regional bus driving rodeo awards. He was a member of the Department of Family and Children Services Board of Directors, a member of the Toombs County Democratic Committee, and a former Lions Club member. He was Methodist, and was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny J. Williams and Cora Lee O’Neal Williams. He was a loving husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and also was an avid hunter and fisherman.

 

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Glenda Williams of Cedar Crossing; three daughters, Laura D. (Tracy “Skip”) Clark of Cedar Crossing, Jeanne M. (Paul) Wright of Crystal River, Florida, and Leigh Ann (Lyndon) Amis of Washington, Georgia; two sisters, Pinky (Billy) Milligan of Cedar Crossing, and Johnnie Jean Branch of the Five Points Community; two brothers, Troy (Leola) Williams of Lyons, and Trenton (Louise) Williams of Cedar Crossing; five grandchildren, Nick Peterson, Britteny Blissett, Melissa Clark-Stopa, Ben Clark, and Blake Amis; one great-grandchild, Jackson Stopa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 26^th at 11:00 am in the Tabernacle Baptist Church with Reverend Bobby Thompson and Reverend Henry Dowd officiating. Interment will follow in the Sharpe Cemetery near Alston.

 

 

Memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 160, Vidalia, GA 30475.

 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 9:00.

Collins, Mr. George L. Davis, age 65 of Collins, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010 in the Tattnall Healthcare Nursing Home in Reidsville after an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County; living in Savannah for twenty-two years, and moved to Collins in 2000. He was a service station attendant, also was self employed, and attended the Collins Full Gospel Church in Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merlon Walter Davis and Cornelia Sally Daniels Davis, and a brother, Willie Davis.

 

Mr. Davis is survived by one daughter, Theresa Davis of Stark, Florida, two sons, Dewayne Davis and George Davis of Moultrie, three sisters, Betty D. Harrelson, Melba Davis, and Sharon (Eric) Mack all of Collins, three brothers, Johnny (Pam) Davis and Jehugh Hall Davis of Collins, and Billy Davis of Vidalia, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was a life long resident of Toombs County, a farmer and retired from the Lyons Stockyard after forty years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Lyons Lions Club, and served as a Toombs County Commissioner where he was involved with the replacement of the last wooded bridge in Toombs County. He was chosen as the 2002 Conservationist of the Year, and was a member of the Marvin United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by five siblings, J.D., Lonnie, Lamar, and Grady Howell, and Addie Howell Dilmore. Mr. Howell is survived by one son, Bobby C. Howell of the Marvin Community, three brothers, Archie C. Lyons, Mr. L. E. Knight, age 85 of Lyons, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 in the Toombs Nursing Home of Lyons after an extended illness. He was a native of Valdosta, growing up there, and entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed in Jacksonville, Florida at both the Gilman and Mayport Shipyards for twenty-five years. He moved to Toombs County in 1969, and worked with Sea Island Cotton Gin in Vidalia for twenty years and retired. He was a member of the St. Matthews Church of God, and was preceded in death by his parents, Will E. Knight and Etta Clark Knight.

 

Mr. Knight is survived by his wife of sixty years, Martha Nan Carter Knight of Lyons, three sons, Gene Knight of Lyons; Vance Knight of Uvalda; and Lloyd Knight of Nashville, Tennessee, two daughters, Elaine Coleman of Lyons; and Elizabeth Coward of Rock Hill, South Carolina, three sisters, Naomi Stancil, and Virginia Bishop of Jacksonville, Florida, and Connie Johnson of St. Simons, Island, thirteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was born July 8, 1984 in Savannah, and lived in Glennville and Charlotte N.C. most of his life. He regularly attended Abundant Faith Church in Reidsville, was an avid self-taught guitarist/songwriter, and a full-time student of the University of Phoenix. He was employed with Trane Residential Solutions of Vidalia as a Production Technician. He attended Tattnall County High School and was a graduate of Class of 2003 of Cabarrus Central High School in North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his paternal Grandparents, Glen and Imogene Stiegman. He is survived by his parents, Steve Stiegman of Glennville, Kim Davis Hayes (J.T.) of Charlotte, NC; stepbrother, Jonathan Carver of Hephzibah; maternal grandparents, Shirley Purvis Whitson (Andy) of Claxton, Buddy Davis of Savannah; special second mother, Pam McCord of Glennville, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
