Johnson’s Corner Community, Mr. Durwood Collins, age 62 of the Johnson’s Corner, died Friday, May 14, 2010 in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after a sudden illness. He was a native of Tattnall County, moved to Savannah, and was a 1966 graduate of Groves High School. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served on the Aircraft Carrier, USS Coral Sea for four years. In 1974 he worked at Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant in Appling County, and in 1978 he started at Plant Vogel in Waynesboro with eleven years of service. He worked thirteen years with the Georgia Department of Transportation as a field engineer in the Baxley office where he retired. He attended and supported the Edmond Chapel Church of God through his volunteer service for fifteen years of overseeing the winter monthly BBQ sandwich fundraiser. He was affectionately known as the “BBQ Man”, and was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his father, Monroe Collins, his step-father, Herbert Blaxton, and a sister, Patricia Ann Campbell
 
Mr. Collins is survived by his loving wife of thirty-nine years, Wanda Toole Collins of Johnson’s Corner, three daughters, Patty (Pete) Akridge of Stillmore; Shonda (James) Jackson; and Dawn (Jamie) Cauley all of Johnson’s Corner, his mother, Vondell Collins Blaxton of Johnson’s Corner, one sister, Brenda NeSmith, and Donnie (Barbara) Collins of Glenwood, three grandsons, Kyle Morris, T.J. Jackson, and Austin Akridge, five granddaughters, Jessica Kersey, Brittany Collins, Lily Nan Cauley, Kayla Jackson, and Heaven Akridge,  one great-granddaughter Kylee Morris, numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, two longtime friends, Woodrow Pittman and Jim Davis.
 
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 17th at 5:00 pm in the Edmond Chapel Church of God with Reverend Joey Copeland and Reverend F.M. Henderson officiating. Interment will follow in the Toole Cemetery near the church cemetery.
 
The family will receive friends at the church Sunday evening from 6:00 until 9:00.
