RIDGELAND, JASPER COUNTY, SC - Leonidas Gastiones Newton, better known as Lee, was born in Pineland, South Carolina on August 18, 1928 to Edwin and Ellen Newton, their only child. He passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Lee was educated in the Jasper County Public School system at Gillisonville Elementary School, Ridgeland, South Carolina. He had a outstanding career in the Army and retired with the rank Of Command Sergeant Major. When he retired from the Army in 1969 he was awarded The Meritorious Service Medal. Lee owned and operated several successful business ventures in Baltimore, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Juanita T. Newton and leaves to cherish his memory, one daughter, Lynne Shivers and two sons, Steven High and Tony Newton, four grandchildren and a host of loving relatives. Viewing: 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Calvary. The Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 4:00 pm at Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Faith Church, 11565 Gillison Branch Road, Ridgeland, SC 29936. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lester Newton Scholarship Fund, c/o Lloyd Newton, 6128 Audubon Manor Blvd, Lithia, FL, 33547. Final burial site will be in Baltimore, MD.
