SAVANNAH - William "Bill" Andrew Collins, 83, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Agnes H. Collins, died Thursday morning, November 12, 2009, at Hospice Savannah. Mr. Collins was born in College Park, Georgia. He was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church and was retired as the first service master dealer in Savannah. Mr. Collins was a member of the American Legion. Surviving are his wife of fifty two years, Agnes Herrin Collins of Savannah, Georgia; one son, William "Bill" Collins and his wife, Elizabeth, of Savannah, Georgia and one grandson, Mathew M. Mr. Aubry Crews, age 68 of Vidalia, died Friday, November 13, 2009 surrounded by his family. He was a native Marshallville in Taylor County, but had lived most of his life in Toombs County. He was a carpenter, Baptist by faith, and a good friend to all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Lula Bloodworth Crews.

 

Aubry is survived by four children, Lawrence and Sheila Crews of Gray; Steve and Patty Crews of West palm Beach, Florida; Sidney and Julie Crews of Houston, Texas; and Heather Miller of Gray, five sisters, Audrey Hulett of Vidalia; Ruby Denmark of Macon; Bobbie Pittman of Vidalia; Hazel and Hector Reyes of Whiton, California; and Alice and Howell Crowe of Johnson’s Corner, one brother, Ray and Claire Crews of Macon, five grandchildren, one great-grandson, twenty-one nieces and nephews, and a loyal friend Hugh Rolison.

 

A memorial service will be held Monday, November 16th at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend C.B. Easterlin officiating.

Mr. James McCray Edwards, Jr. -

 

REGISTER - Mr. James McCray Edwards, Jr. age 61, died Friday at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Chatham County native was the son of James McCray Edwards, Sr. and Pearl Thomas Edwards. He was raised in Bryan County and attended school there and later Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. He was employed for many years with Hunt-Wesson Foods in Savannah. Mr. Edwards owned and operated Greenleaf Nursery in Statesboro for many years. He was a member of the Grace Community Church. Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his brother, Chip Edwards. Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Gail Fort Edwards of Register; two sons, Chuck Lee Edwards of Austin, TX and James McCray Edwards III of Statesboro; two step children, T.J. and Sara Strickland of Springfield and Tania and Lee Kessler of Springfield; two sisters, Candace and Keith Williams of Statesboro and Ann and Hoss Underwood of Savannah; eight grandchildren, Landon, Logan, Wade, R.J., Madison, Hunter, Kaylee and Kaycee and his the mother of his children, Penny Coffey of Statesboro. Miriam Evelyn Gnann - WHITE ROCK, SC - Miriam Evelyn Gnann passed away Friday, November, 13, 2009 at the Lowman Home Nursing Center under the care of Lutheran Hospice, White Rock, SC. Miss Gnann was born in Stillwell, GA as one of six children of Walter A. and Hortensia Elizabeth Shearouse Gnann on March 13, 1915. She was a graduate of Effingham Academy (1930), Springfield, GA and also a graduate of Newberry College (1936), Newberry, SC. She was clerk and secretary to the Registrar at South Carolina State Hospital, Columbia, SC for 24 years. She retired from the State Board for Technical & Comprehensive Education, Columbia, SC. She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC, where she frequently played the piano for church services, weddings, receptions, etc. Later she became an active member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Chapin, SC. She is survived by a brother, Sidney Gnann, White Rock, SC. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman C. Gnann and Edward Gnann and two sisters, Bertha Gnann Robinson and Essie Gnann. Other survivors include a niece, Ava Elizabeth Hartzog, and three nephews, Ralph Gnann, Phillip Gnann and Walter D. Gnann. Funeral services will be held in the New Life Chapel at the Heritage at Lowman at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. JACKSONVILLE, FL - Evelyn Strain Harlin, 79, died November 11, 2009 at Sterling House Assisted Living under the care of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. She was born in Roanoke, Alabama, daughter of the late, Padrue K. and Lois McCarter Strain. She lived in Savannah for fifty years until she recently moved to Jacksonville to be close to her son and daughter-in-law. Mrs. Harlin was an accomplished piano and guitar teacher for over thirty years. Her husband of sixty two years, Rudolph Harlin, brother, Ray Strain and grandson, Joseph Harlin preceded her in death. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Lynn Harlin; sister, Syble Spears and her husband, Bill; grandsons, Christopher Harlin, Jonathan Borgsmiller and his wife, Jessica; great grandson, Christian Harlin; nieces, Angelia Kaplan and Hilda Jones. She was a graduate of Savannah High School and later attended Armstrong Junior College. Over the years, she worked with Southern Bell and the Chatham County Board of Education. As a life long member of The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension, she was involved with many aspects and activities of the church. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Kimker, her husband, Iverson Walker "Pete" Hendry, and granddaughter, Heather Ann Hendry. She is survived by her son, Peter Walker Hendry; brother, John Kimker, Jr., both of Savannah; granddaughter, Michelle Hendry McDonald; great-granddaughters, Amanda Kellam, Kayle Stewart, Rebecca Broad, Anna Kellam, Abbey Hendry, and many nieces and nephews. Claude Marshall Hunt Jr. -

 

SAVANNAH - Claude Marshall Hunt Jr., 89, of Savannah GA, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon Nov 8th in Tarboro NC. He was predeceased by his wife of over fifty years, Christine Thorpe Hunt, also of Savannah. He is survived by three daughters, Connie Hunt Mitchell and Marsha Hunt Wilson of Georgia, and Leslie Rae Hunt of Tennessee. He is survived by 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grand children and 2 great-great grandchildren. Mr. Hunt served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War Two. An aviation mechanic, he repaired some of Greg "Pappy" Boyington's Black Sheep Squadron planes when they limped into his airstrip. He later joined the Air Force, and was retired from that service. Mr. Hunt will be interred beside his wife in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Arrangements will be announced later. Savannah- Charles E. Lucas, 90, died November 10, 2009 at his home at Savannah Square under the care of Hospice Savannah.

Mr. Lucas was born in Owen County, Indiana on April 10, 1919, the son of the late William E. and Dollie Barnes Lucas. He was raised and attended school in Metcalf, Illinois before enlisting in the U. S. Air Force in 1942. During WWII, he served in the Caribbean Theatre with the 26th Antisubmarine Wing as Aircraft Crew Chief and Flight Engineer. During his military service, Master Sergeant Lucas received several decorations and awards including the Air Force Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. After retirement in 1964, Mr. Lucas went to work with the U.S. Post Office where he worked for the following 22 years.

Mr. Lucas was a member of the N.A.R.F.E, a member of Edgar Lodge No. 829 in Hume Illinois, as well as being affiliated locally, and was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He had a great ability to grow and raise roses, was known for his handiness in wood working and carving, and was an avid classic car enthusiast.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dorothea "Gerri" Lucas; daughter, Harriet Winiger, both of Savannah; granddaughter, Kim McFarland (Dan); great-grandchildren, Christian and Conor McFarland, all of Washington, DC; sisters, Ruby Neil of Chrisman, IL and Frances Allison of Royal Center, IN; brother, Bill Lucas of Chattanooga, TN, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 13, 2009 at the Hodgson Chapel of Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors.

Eleanor Battis Wedge -

 

SAVANNAH - Eleanor Battis Wedge, 93, died Friday, November 13, 2009. Mrs. Wedge was born February 18, 1916 in Everett, MA. She graduated with honors from Burdett Business College and was employed with AT&T and American Airlines. In 1956 she moved to Daytona, FL where she worked at Halifax Hospital until retirement in 1980. She was a member of Highlands Presbyterian church while living in Daytona. In 2000, she moved to Savannah to be closer to her family. She was the widow of John Harold Valentine and Milo Thomas Wedge. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Dona Valentine of Savannah; step-daughter, Sharon Sherman of West Bath, ME, and step-granddaughter, Jessica Sheetz of Rincon. A private burial will take place at Daytona Memorial Park in Daytona, FL. Roy Lee Williams (September 27, 1932-November 13, 2009).  

 

RICHMOND HILL, BRYAN COUNTY, GEORGIA - Roy Lee Williams, age 77, died on November 13, 2009. Roy was born in Clyde, GA on September 27, 1932, to the late Fred Williams and Lottie Cribbs Williams. Later the Williams family moved to Richmond Hill where he remained for the rest of his life with the exception of time in the U. S. Army and two years in Augusta, GA. He attended the Richmond Hill schools graduating in the class of 1953. He joined the U.S. Army upon graduation and served the majority of his time in Orleans, France. Upon returning to Richmond Hill, he acquired a job with Pittsburgh Paint and Glass Company working in the warehouse and worked his way to manager of the paint store, before he retired after 32 years. The company later became PPG Industries. He then worked for Peacock Paints as store manager for three years. Upon leaving the paint business, Roy drove a school bus for the Bryan County School System for eleven years. Roy was a 50+ member of the Richmond Hill United Methodist Church. He was a founding member of the young adults and couples Sunday School Class which later became the Fishermans Class. He was a member of the R. H. Jaycees and the R. H. Ford's Bucks and Does Square Dance Club. Roy was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Rushing and brothers, Connie and Redge Williams. Roy and Sammie were married on May 9, 1959 and celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 9, 2009 with family and friends. Survivors: wife, Addie B. "Sammie" Williams; daughters, Teresa Guidry (Kent) of Lafayette, LA, and Diane Wright (Billy) of Brooklet, GA; grandchildren, Jason Carpenter (Christie), Joshua Carpenter (Jade) and Jeni Wright of Brooklet, GA, Benjamin White, Adam White and Jacob Daigle of Baton Rouge, LA; great-grandchildren, Samantha Carpenter and Jason Michael Carpenter of Brooklet, GA; brother, Hubert Williams, Barnesville, GA; niece and caregiver, Mildred Hilliard and numerous other nieces and nephews. Visitation: 5-7 p.m., Sunday, November 15, 2009, Richmond Hill Funeral Home. Services: 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 16, 2009, Richmond Hill United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bill Strickland, Rev.
