Mary Ringwald Yancey (November 2, 1940 - November 23, 2009) -

 

SAVANNAH - Mary Ringwald Yancey, born on November 2, 1940 in Savannah, Georgia, died on November 23, 2009 at her daughter's home in Gainesville, Florida after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 47 years, Don Yancey, daughter, Tonya Sieber, son-in-law, Kurt Sieber, and five grandchildren, Kayli, Kevin, Shelby, Courtney, and Brittany Sieber of Gainesville, Florida; daughter, Beth Borchart, son-in-law Chuck Borchart, and two grandchildren, Matt and Lauren Borchart of Savage Minnesota; son, Lee Yancey, daughter-in-law, Sonja Yancey, of Jacksonville, Florida. Mary married Don Yancey in Savannah, Georgia on December 29, 1962. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1958 and received her nursing degree in 1962 from Warren A. Candler Hospital School of Nursing in Savannah, Georgia. While she worked a career as a respected Registered Nurse, she considered her roles as wife, mother of her three children, and wonderful Mema of her seven grandchildren as the most important ones. Mary had a gift for gardening and cooking. She had a "green thumb" that could make any plant grow beautifully. Her cooking was always the very best with a wide array of recipes. She also enjoyed spending time with five local grandchildren who will miss their Mema tremendously. Mary was also an avid reader, enjoyed her vacations relaxing on the beach, and fishing. Mary was a great role model and friend who was always looked upon for her keen intelligence and wisdom. She will be truly and deeply missed by all who have known her and whose hearts she has touched. Visitation will be on Friday, November 27, 2009 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. A graveside funeral service will be held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 11:00AM. BLACK CREEK, BRYAN COUNTY, GEORGIA - Robert David "Bob" Burton, 52, died November 25, 2009 Wednesday morning at his home. Mr. Burton was formerly of Macon but had lived in Black Creek for over 20 years. He was a long-time employee of Happy Hour of Warner Robins; a member of Missionary Alliance Methodist Church of Warner Robins; and enjoyed TV, coloring, shopping and participating in the Special Olympics. Survivors include brothers Mike Burton of Jacksonville, Ronald Snyder of Macon, Paul Kuntz, Jr. of Black Creek, Wesley and Nelson Burton and Larry (Vicki) all of Pennsylvania, sisters LuElla Cousins, Judy Lahew, Lisa Burton and Mary Burton all of Pennsylvania, Carol Koehler of El Paso, Mae Kuntz of Black Creek and Kristine Snyder of Macon. SAVANNAH - Carl Benferd Cheek, 78, of Savannah, passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 2009 at Hospice House of Savannah after a short illness. Carl served in the United States Air Force from 1947 until 1967 and retired as a Master Sergeant. Carl will forever be remembered by his wife of 54 years, Faye Johnson Cheek; two sons, Carl Benferd "Benny" Cheek, Jr., and Larry Edward Cheek and his wife, Donnell; two brothers, Alfred Cheek and his wife Lanell, of Mt. Vernon, and Terry Cheek and his wife, Carol, of Macon; a sister-in-law, Jackie Lane and her husband, Jim, and brother-in-law, Wayne Johnson and his wife, Marilyn, of Peoria, AZ; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Kacie, and Chelsea Cheek, along with several nieces and nephews. John Winston Hillock, Sr. -

 

SAVANNAH - John Winston Hillock, Sr., 88, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Sara Noblitt Hillock, died Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 2009, at Memorial Health University Medical Center. Born in Millersburg, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Claude Hillock and the late Helen Purdy Hillock. Mr. Hillock was of the Presbyterian faith and was a United States Army veteran having served in Europe during World War II. He attended mechanical engineering school at the University of Kentucky. Mr. Hillock was a retired master mechanic and was the former owner and operator of Auto Sports. His life was his family, cars, golf and traveling with his wife. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Sara Noblitt Hillock of Savannah, Georgia; three daughters, Carolyn Phillips and her husband, Bing, of Statesboro, Georgia, Janice Mason and her longtime companion, Reggie Kessler, of Garden City, Georgia, and Theresa Cantelli and her husband, J. T., of Savannah, Georgia; one son, John W. Hillock, Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Atlanta, Georgia; four grandchildren, Steven Mason, Alicia Cantelli, John W. Hillock III and Elizabeth Hillock; two sisters, Julia Fleming and Betty Shelburne, both of Millersburg, Kentucky, and one brother, Edwin R. Hillock of Louisville, Kentucky. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue. JESUP - W.C. Long, 87, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at his residence in Griffin under the care of Brightmoor Hospice. He was a native of Wayne County and had lived in Griffin for 8 years. He was a former School Teacher, State Senator, Wayne County Administrator and Jesup City Manager. He was a member and life Deacon at First Baptist Church of Jesup and the Sunday School Superintendent for 20 years. He was also a Sunday School Teacher for many years and a member of the Baptist Brotherhood. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific theatre. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ann Richardson Long and a granddaughter, Terri Long. Survivors are his sons, Bob Long and Linda of Griffin and Joe Long and Delana of Birmingham, Alabama; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the Jesup First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Hardee and Dr. Michael vonMoss officiating. Her childhood years were spent in Collins, Georgia, but she has resided in Evans County for over seventy years. She was one of the first members of Eastside Baptist Church where she taught children's Sunday School and served as the church librarian for many years. She was also a former member of the Gideon's Auxiliary. Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raleigh Rogers. SAVANNAH - Marjorie "Pie" Nash Sherrod, 87, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born May 28, 1922 in Hanover County, Virginia. She was one of ten children born to Bernard James Nash and Irma Tyler Nash. After graduating from high school in Richmond, Virginia, she worked for the telephone company during WWII. In 1947, she married Jack Patterson Sherrod and moved to Savannah. Pie, as she was affectionately known, was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Betty Ann Nash, Muriel Nash Templeman, Genevieve Nash Eubank, Thelma Nash Hamilton, Ophelia Nash Benton and brother, Bernard James Nash, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Pat Sherrod, of Savannah; four children, Patricia Sherrod Myers, of Raleigh, NC, William Dewey Sherrod, of Savannah, John Stephen Sherrod, of Rincon, Jack Timothy Sherrod, of Savannah; brothers, Robert Nash, Norwood Nash, John Nash; nine grandchildren, Daniel, Sarah, Rachel, Rebecca, Emily, Lauren, Travis, Timmy, Chris; two great-grandchildren, Anna Grace, Malaina and many nieces and nephews. SAVANNAH, CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA - Deacon Leroy Smith, Sr., journeyed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday morning, November 21, 2009. Born in Sumter, South Carolina, he is the son of the late Mr, Walter and Mrs. Laura Smith. He received his formal education through the Sumter County Public School System. Upon moving to Okeechobee, Florida, he met and was united in holy matrimony to Miss Audrey Oliver, They later re-located to Savannah, Georgia and were blessed with three loving children, Larry Oliver, Leroy Smith, Jr. (both preceded him in passing) and Ronalda Smith. He confessed Christ as his personal Savior and joined in fellowship with the New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church of Christ where he served faithfully until his health began to fail. Leaving to cherish his wonderful memories: a loving wife, Missionary Audrey Smith, Savannah, GA; four daughters, Ronalda Smith, Atlanta, GA, Stephanie Williams, Daytona Beach, FL, Cearah Moose and Latoya Oliver, both of Savannah, GA; two sons, Leroy M. Smith, Daytona Beach, FL and PSLT Roosevelt (Desma) Oliver, AFG, Iraq; two sisters, Loretha Stukes, Ola Mae Manning, both of Sumter, SC; two brothers, Jackie (Jackie) Smith and Leon Smith, both of Sumter, SC; father-in-law, Alexander Oliver, Indian Town, FL; mother-in-law, Cora )3. CHARLESTON, SC - Mr. Eric G. Smith, age 48 died suddenly on Saturday, November 21, 2009 in Charleston, SC. Eric was born in Statesboro, Georgia on December 4, 1960 to the late Rev. Willie A. Smith and Mrs. Grace Donaldson-Smith. Eric was a 1978 graduate of Statesboro High School and a 1982 graduate of Mercer University with a B.S. in Biology. He did further studies at Georgia Southern College now University, Swainsboro Technical College, Medical College of Georgia and Biosystems Institute. He was employed by Medical University of South Carolina with MEDUCARE as a Pediatric Flight Respiratory Therapist. He leaves precious memories to his significant other, Karen L. McGhee and their son, Eric G. Smith, Jr., both of Charleston, SC; his mother, Grace D. Smith, Statesboro, GA; 1 brother, Willie A. "Billy" (Veronica) Smith, Statesboro, GA; 4 uncles, George (Evelyn) Donaldson, Kingston, NC, Paul Donaldson, Robert A. "Bobby" (Almarita) Donaldson and Earl Donaldson all of Statesboro, GA; 2 aunts, Mildred Patterson, Old Bridge, NJ and Carolyn (William) Hughes, Statesboro, GA; Karen's parents James R. and Shirley McGhee, Towanda, PA; Karen's siblings, Elaine and Larry Elliot, Towanda, PA, Steve and Diana McGhee, Columbia, SC and a host of other relatives and friends.
