SAVANNAH - Marie Patterson Barrett, 92, died November 20th, 2009, at her residence. She was born in Tellico Plains, TN, daughter of the late Jess Waco Patterson and Evelyn Carroll Patterson. Mrs. Barrett was a member of Bull Street Baptist Church, a former member of St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church, the Chatham Club, and the Elks Club. She was the Executive Vice President of Barrett Oil Co. ,Inc. where she worked alongside her husband. Her favorite hobbies were gardening, antique collecting which she sold in her antique shop in Central Fl and fishing at Angler's Paradise Lodge in Florida which she and her husband co-owned. Her husband, M. Jack Barrett and grandson, David Jackson Barrett preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter Shirley B. Daniel of McDonough, GA ; son Jackson C. Barrett, daughter in law Patricia G. Barrett of Savannah, GA; granddaughters S. Marie Daniel of McDonough, GA; Stephanie B. Davis and her husband Brian of Macon, GA; Laurie K. Mr. F. H. (Pete) Boney -

 

ST. SIMONS - Mr. F. H. (Pete) Boney, 94, of Saint Simons Island, Ga, formerly of Summerville, died Thursday, November 19, 2009, in Brunswick, Georgia. He was born December 13, 1914, in Fitzgerald, GA. a son of the late L.W. and Emma Swinney Boney. He graduated from the University of Miami where he played fullback for the Hurricanes. He began a teaching and coaching career in Trion, GA in 1936. During WW II he served in the U.S. Navy and continued in the Reserves for 25 years, retiring as a Commander. After the war he graduated from Emory University Law School and in 1957 opened a law practice in Summerville, GA for some thirty years. During his career he was elected to one term as the Judge of City Court in Chattooga County. He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Brewer Boney, and their son, Peter L. Boney. He is survived by a daughter, Marcia Boney of St. Simons Island; grandchildren and husbands, Belle and Link Baker, Lilburn; Leigh and Dr. Jeff Baumbach, Dothan, AL and Ann and George Williams , Knoxville, TN; great grandchildren Virginia, Elizabeth, Will, and Mary Grant Baumbach; Emily, George, Cullen, Maggie, and Kate Williams and Brewer Baker. William Henry Holt, Jr. -

 

SAVANNAH - William Henry Holt, Jr., 73, died November 19, 2009 at Memorial University Medical Center. He was born and reared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. Holt moved to Savannah while in the United States Air Force stationed at Hunter Air Field. He was a member of the 308th. Bomb Wing Division, servicing KC-97 Tankers, and B-47 Bombers. After his military career, he was educated in electronics at Armstrong Atlantic University and Savannah Technical College. He worked a short time for Union Camp Corporation before accepting a position with Kodak, Inc. During his 35 year career with Kodak, he worked in Atlanta, receiving some of his training for his position as Technical Resource person and Senior Field Engineer working mostly in Rochester, New York. He was a communicant of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and was a former member of St. James Catholic Church. Mr. Holt was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a 4th degree knight. He enjoyed flying large scale model air planes and offshore fishing. His wife, Kathleen Mary Thompson Holt and son, William Henry Holt, III preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Walter Holt and Sheila F. Holt; Jay Michael Holt all of Savannah; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Mary Haupt and Calvin Haupt of Atlanta; two grandsons, John James Nakelski and Taylor Walter Holt both of Savannah. Elmar von Kurzbach, M.D. (April 7, 1924-November 20, 2009).

 

SAVANNAH, CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA - Dr. Elmar von Kurzbach, 85 died Friday, November 20, 2009 at his residence on Talahi Island. He was born on April 7, 1924 in Germany. He was a 1952 graduate of Leopoldino Franciscea University Medical School in Austria. He was a family practice physician in Savannah until 1977. He was also a graduate of the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, Pensacola, Florida in May, 1979. He retired in 1991 as a Captain from the Medical Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve, as a Flight Surgeon. Dr. von Kurzbach was a member of the Georgia Medical Society, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians, Fellow, a life member of the Society of U.S. Naval Flight Surgeons, a Senior Medical Examiner for the Department of Veteran Affairs for North Florida and South Georgia, in Gainesville and Jacksonville, Florida. He was also a past Clinical Professor in the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He was certified with The American Board of Disability Analysts, and was a member of the American Legion, Post 154. Dr. von Kurzbach was also a life member of the Marine Corps Reserve Officers Association, The Aerospace Medical Association, The U.S. Naval Institute, The American College of Physicians Executives, The New York Academy of Science, The Federal Safety and Health Council. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth P. von Kurzbach, of Savannah, two sons, Trevor von Kurzbach and his wife, Mary, of Rhode Island and Elmar von Kurzbach and his wife, Cathy, of Jacksonville, Florida, two daughters, Dinah Myers and her husband, George, of Macon, GA, and Hiltrud Martin and her husband, Michael, of Texas, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren on the way. A Memorial Service for Dr. von Kurzbach will be held Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., at the Islands Chapel of Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors. GOOSE CREEK, SC - Susan Larkin 54, wife of Mike Larkin, passed away on November 18, 2009 at a local hospital. She was born in Bridgeston, NJ on August 6, 1955, to the late William Carr and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Rizzo Carr. Even though she always took great pride in being "the best" in her professional life, Susan's greatest joy was being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is sadly missed by all who knew her. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Betty Carr, brothers David and Michael Carr, sons Seth Friday and Justin Ferguson, daughters Courtney Friday Colwell and Megan Ferguson, grandchildren Gracie and Olivia Colwell and Nathan Friday, a niece and three nephews, Abigail and Ethan Carr, and Toren and Kellan Carr. Dr. Milton Mazo -

 

ATLANTA - Dr. Milton Mazo, 92, a retired pediatrician and life-long collector of art, died November 20, 2009. Dr. Mazo was born in Savannah, GA in 1906. He attended Savannah High School and attended both college and medical school at the University of Georgia. During World War II, he served in the Army Medical Corps in North Africa. Dr. Mazo opened his medical practice in Savannah shortly after his discharge from the Army. For 40 years, he had one of the leading pediatric practices in the city, treating 1000's of young people who today still consider themselves "Mazo Babies." Having been stationed in Africa, Dr. Mazo became fascinated with African Art, which launched his love of art and his passion for collecting all kinds of art. Later in life, he became a benefactor of many museums, including the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. He is survived by his life partner, Billy Poole, his brother and sister-in-law, Irwin and Julie Mazo of Savannah, his sister-in-law Bernice Mazo of Atlanta, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Bonaventure Cemetery. She was a member of Houston Lake Baptist Church and of the Crossroads Quartet. She was a homemaker and had worked in civil service at Robins Air Force Base for some years. She was predeceased by her husband, Curtis W. Rinehart, son, Robert P. Rinehart, great-grandchild, Chase Rinehart, and parents Robert Williford and Lilly Mae Williford. SAVANNAH - Deacon Vernia Shavers, 77, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Hospice savannah. He was a native of Savannah, Georgia. Deacon Shavers was a member of Thankful Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Deacon Board. He was a member of Prince Hall Lodge #28. He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Shavers Sr. and his mother, Essie M. Jones Shavers. He leaves to cherish his memories: wife, Mable Jones Shavers; children, Vernia Shavers III of Detroit, Michigan, Ronald Shavers of Backerville, California, Donald Shavers (Adeline) of West Germany, Melvin Shavers (Ruby) of Detroit Michigan, Ricky Shavers of Detroit, Michigan, Joseph Shavers of Dayton, Ohio, and Dr. Berlinda Shavers of El Cerrito, California; step-children, Kenneth Jones of Orlando, Florida, Jerome Jones of Savannah, Georgia, Michael Jones (Catherine) of Pembroke, Georgia, and Sheldon Johnson of Hinesville, Georgia; siblings, Leila Bowen of Savannah, GA, George Shavers of Savannah, GA; and Jimmie L. WAYNESBORO - Mrs. Jeannette Brantley Turner, 77, died Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the Burke Medical Center. Mrs. Turner was a native and longtime resident of Jenkins County, Georgia. She owned and operated Brantley's Little School in Millen for many years and was a member of Botsford Baptist Church in Waynesboro. Surviving are, her children, Wendell Brantley Jr. and wife Glenda and Russell B. Brantley and wife Marty both of Waynesboro, Ga., Mikell G. Brantley of Millen, Ga. and Deborah Brantley Salter and husband Greg of Waynesboro, Ga.; her step-children, Mike Turner and wife Shannon and Sherry Kilgore both of Hephzibah, Ga.; her brother's, Raymond Gene Sapp. Sr. and Melvin R. Sapp both of Perkins, Ga.; her sisters, Joyce S. Lanier of Garfield, Ga., Velma S. Bragg and Carolyn S. Law both of Millen, Ga., Marilyn S. Welch of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
