Charles Franklin Anderson Jr. -

 

SAVANNAH - Charles Franklin Anderson Jr., passed to that peaceful place where there is no pain or suffering, at age 62, on November 28, 2009. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Patricia Marie Wells Anderson, and his pride and joy, son Charles Franklin Anderson III. Chuck was preceded in death by his father Charles F. Anderson Sr. and mother Clifford Blair Anderson. He leaves behind to mourn his absence three sisters, Vicki Murff and husband Donald Murff, Dusty Roper and husband George Roper, Tammi Bock and husband Frank Bock, countless aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many cousins. His was a close and loving family. Chuck was always proud of his involvement in the Jacksonville American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps. He was a member of the recruit class Summer 1964 where he spent countless hours on the towers along the beach. He was proud to serve on the Board of Directors and was actively engaged in the planning and preparation for the upcoming 100th anniversary celebration. A member of the United States Coast Guard from 1966 until 1972, he was an Air Crewman flying on many life saving missions from Alaska to Miami. Chuck was an instrument rated commercial pilot, and he possessed a great love for all things aviation. A most devout Christian, he was a communicant of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church of Savannah. He loved playing his guitar, and provided music for any group on any occasion. Chuck was a man of immense people skills. To know him was to admire and like him. He worked in the paper business and was associated with Fort Howard and Georgia Pacific companies, retiring after 30 years. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps, c/o Sean O'Brien, 11932 Grand Meadows Way, Jacksonville, FL 32258. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. A Rosary Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. His ashes will be scattered in a ceremony held in front of the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Station, Jacksonville Beach, FL at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, December 6, 2009. BRISTOL - M. A. Dixon, Jr., 74, died November 27, 2009. Mr. Dixon was born on June 1, 1935 to the late T. I. and Mary Lou Pope Dixon. He was a lifelong resident of Appling County and was a member of Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Germany and was retired from farming. Survivors are his wife, Esther Walker Dixon and one son, Alex Dixon both of Bristol; three sisters, Sue Nell Holley of Baxley, Dot Tillman of Surrency, and Faye Doke of Brunswick; two brothers, Robert Dixon of Surrency and Charles Dixon of Bristol. SAVANNAH - Bernice Angeline Ervin, 85, of Savannah, Georgia, and formerly of North Carolina, died Saturday morning, November 28, 2009, at Azalealand Nursing Home. Born in Forsyth County, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Ervin and the late Myrtle Augusta Sheets Ervin. Miss Ervin was a member of Bull Street Baptist Church and a former member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Conover, North Carolina. She was a retired nursing assistant at Snyder's Rest Home in Lenoir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Iris Baker. Surviving are five sisters, Hazel Martin of Long Beach, North Carolina, Nina Fletcher and her husband, Harold, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Patricia Hughes and her husband, Arnold, of Savannah, Georgia, and Barbara Stewart and her husband, Shelton, of Greenwood, South Carolina; two brothers, Robert Lee Ervin, Jr. and his wife, Aggie, of St. Augustine, Florida, and Ralph Stephen Ervin and his wife, Aileen, of Lincoln, Nebraska. Carl, a native son, was a graduate of Savannah High, held a BS in Psychology from Armstrong and attended an underwater photography school in Berkley, California. He served as a Veterinarian Specialist in the Air force in Turkey after which he traveled extensively. He was a retired real-estate broker, as a lover of books and knowledge; he was also a book and vinyl records dealer. Carl was a caregiver to many and a friend to all. He is survived by Martin Fleischaker (Maria) of Salisbury NC, Howard Fleischaker (Maralyn), Carol Cohen (Errol) of Savannah and his beloved friend Ursula Adam of Savannah. She was a graduate of Swainsboro High School. Martha was a longtime employee of the Savannah Golf Club where she worked in the Pro Shop and retired after 52 years of dedicated service. Freeman Napier Jelks, Jr. -

 

SAVANNAH - Freeman Napier Jelks, Jr., 80, died on November 28, 2009 with his children at his side. Mr. Jelks was a lifelong resident of Savannah. He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal. He was a Life Member of The Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Georgia; an honorary member of the St. Andrews Society of Georgia; and an honorary member of The Oglethorpe Club of Savannah. Mr. Jelks was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Freeman N. Jelks of Savannah. He was the great-great-great-grandson of Benjamin Andrew Coleman, who served under Washington at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778 as Captain of the 5th North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Army. Mr. Jelks' primary interest for many years was The Savannah Country Day School, where he served as a member and then Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The Jelks Fine Arts Center, the Jelks Auditorium and the Jelks Scholarship are named in his honor. Jelks graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, PA, in 1947. He graduated from Princeton University cum laude in economics in 1951. He served for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jelks was discharged from the Army in Japan in 1954 and wrote a widely read weekly column for the Savannah Morning News about his 6-month trip west around the world. On his return to Savannah, Jelks joined his father in the local firm of Johnson, Lane, Space and Co., a member of the New York Stock Exchange, from which he retired as a vice-president in 1994. Jelks was named Outstanding Young Man of the Year in Savannah at age 29 in 1958. He was prominent in leadership in the early years of the Savannah Symphony Society and the Historic Savannah Foundation, serving on both boards and as executive vice-president of the Symphony. Jelks is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Freeman Napier Jelks III and Heather O'Neill Jelks of Alexandria, VA; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura Jelks Crawford and Keith Alan Crawford of Charlottesville, VA; twin grandchildren, Savannah Napier Jelks and Connor O'Neill Jelks; three step grandchildren, Jordan Ashley Crawford, Zachary Joseph Crawford, and Matthew Jacob Crawford; a sister, Mrs. Allen (Retta) Vance of Bristol, TN, a brother in law Allen I. SAVANNAH -Dorothy Barnard Williams McCoy was born to Henry and Naomi Butler Barnard on June 10, 1928. Both parents preceded her in death. Dorothy attended the public schools in Savannah and graduated from Woodville High School. She retired from Chatham Nursing Home in 1984., Early as a child she joined Connor's Temple Baptist Church and has been a lifelong member where she has served on the choir, nurse's board, pastor aide Board and Building Representatives Board, and other ministries. She was a member of Ruth Chapter #3 order of Eastern Star, Internation Affiliate. She was a member of the Pacesetters Social; Civic Organization, West Savannah School Alumni Association, and the Sylvan Terrace Community Association. Survived by a loving Companion David Polite; one son, Wesley E. He was a truck driver for Swift Packing Company for 21 years. He was also a well known and respected commercial fisherman for over 50 years. GLENNVILLE - John E. "Bully" Sands, 77 died Friday, November 27, 2009 at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in St. Petersburg, Florida for many years before moving back to Glennville in 1983. He retired from Gulf Oil Corporation in St. Petersburg in 1983 and the Tattnall County Board of Education as a bus driver. He was a member and deacon of Ella Grove Baptist Church and a former member and deacon of 30th Ave. Baptist Church in St. Petersburg. He served in the Georgia National Guard during the Korean War and is preceded in death by, daughter, Susan Sands Harrell, son, Johnnie Sands Jr. He is survived by his wife, Leona Sands of Glennville; grandchildren, Jonathan Harrell (Jennifer), Andrew Harrell (Christina), Abby Harrell all of Kissimmee, FL; great granddaughter, Emmerson Noel Harrell, several nieces and nephews also survive. SAVANNAH - Paul Mann Shreve, 56, died November 24, 2009 in Bozeman, MT. where he had lived for the past 35 years following his graduation from Montana State University. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Ann (Shellenberg) Shreve; his father, Robert Shreve; sister, Virginia Shreve and her husband Carey Gregory; brothers and their wives, John (Vicki), Daniel (Tami), and Michael (Judy). Paul loved the outdoors, and particularly enjoyed being with friends, floating down the three rivers which flow into the Missouri, fishing and taking nourishment. He also preferred working outdoors, usually in home construction. He was a prolific writer, with many published humorous (and sometimes serious) articles and poems to his credit. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. SAVANNAH, CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA - Lieutenant Colonel Mary Witt Wexler, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 61, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of Colonel Edward Irwin Wexler, U. S. Air Force (Ret.), died Saturday morning, November 28, 2009. Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a daughter of Julia Deason Witt and the late Richard Edward Witt. Mary was a graduate of Savannah High School and earned an Associates and Bachelor of Science Degrees from Armstrong Atlantic State University. She earned a Master's Degree in Health Services Management from Webster University and received her certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Georgia Southern University. Mary began her military career with a direct commission in the Georgia Air National Guard, 165th Tactical Hospital, in 1975. As she progressed through rank, she was granted special authority by the Air National Guard to perform duties as a Nurse Practitioner. She deployed around the world in service to the Air Force including deployment in Desert Shield and the Macon Floods. She was also instrumental in coordinating medical support for the Centennial Olympics in Savannah. She was selected Outstanding Nurse of the Year, by the Air National Guard in 1982. She retired in 2000 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 25 years of service. Mary began her distinguished career as a nurse at Candler Hospital in 1975. As she increased her education she worked through many areas of the hospital, including the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit. As one of the first Nurse Practitioners in Savannah, she worked with Dr. James C. Metts, Jr. and acted as Deputy Coroner for Chatham County. Later in her career she worked with Dr. Paul S. Bradley and retired from Candler Medical Group in 2007. She was highly devoted to her many patients as well as highly respected by the medical community. Mary was a Life Member of the National Guard Association of the United States and Georgia. She was a long-standing member of the Air Force Association. Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Colonel Edward I. Wexler, U. S. Air Force (Ret.) of Savannah, Georgia; three daughters, Susan Darling and her husband, Eric Darling, of Savannah, Sara Bram and her husband, Captain (Chaplain) Michael Bram, stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and Sharon A. Walter and her husband, Michael Walter, of Denver, Colorado; her mother, Julia D. Witt, of Tybee Island, Georgia; her sister, Barbara Gustin and her husband, Dr. William S. Gustin, of Savannah, and five grandchildren, Evelyn Darling, Elijah Darling, Devorah Bram, Chaya Bram, and Simone Walter, as well as many nieces and nephews. The funeral service, with full military honors, will be held at 11 o'clock on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Arnold Mark Belzer. The family will sit Shiva at the residence immediately after the service and from 6 until 8 o'clock Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Commander William Walker Wright, Sr. -

 

SAVANNAH - Commander William Walker Wright, Sr., 83, died Friday, November 27, 2009 in Savannah. He was a resident of Charleston, South Carolina and recently moved to Savannah. He was born in Murphysboro, Illinois on March 19, 1926. During WWII he fought in Europe with the United States Army. Upon his return home he entered the United States Naval Academy where he graduated Class of 1949 with a BS degree. He also earned a degree in electrical engineering from the United States Naval Postgraduate School and a Master in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University. When he retired from the United States Navy, he had given 28 years of armed forces service to our country spanning WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He worked as an engineer at the Medical University of South Carolina, The Citadel and AVCO. Bill was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston and was a master gardener. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan W. Hussey. He is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Lois McKeithen Wright; one son, William Walker Wright, Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Savannah; one sister, Iva Lou Polley, of Illinois, and four grandchildren, Megan A. Hussey, Patrick M. Hussey, Elizabeth R. Wright, and William Walker Wright, III all of Savannah. Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Graveside Service: 2:30 p.m., Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors.
