SAVANNAH - Eilleen Sheppard Aiken, 91, passed away Friday, December 18, 2009 at Memorial Health. The Screven County native was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Sheppard and Marion M. McGregor; husband, Clark F. Aiken; and son, Wallace Aiken. Survivors include her sons, Carl Aiken of Springfield and Wendell Aiken of Pooler; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Sheppard of Jacksonville, FL; and sister, Ann Dent of Sylvania. SAVANNAH - Laura Jane Wiltsey Bateman, 68, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of William "Billy" Bateman, died Friday morning, December 18, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Cuba, New York, she was a daughter of the late Howard Wiltsey and the late Leola Hamilton Wiltsey. Laura was a member of Congregation Mickve Israel and worked as a secretary and personnel director at the local hospital in Cuba, New York. She was a member of the Rosh Chodesh Club at Congregation Mickve Israel. Laura was predeceased in death by three brothers. Surviving are her husband, William "Billy" Bateman of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Kathy Wooster and her husband, Steve of Lakeworth, Florida; two sons, Chris Ward and his wife, Martha, of Sebring, Florida, Lance Burlingame and his wife Marlene, of Henrietta, New York; one step-daughter, Barbara Ann Adler, of Griffin, Georgia; three step-sons, William "Bill" Bateman, Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Southern Pines, North Carolina, Joseph "Joe" Bateman and his wife, Lynn, of Stuart, Florida, Ian H. Bateman and his wife, Shannon, of Seven Lakes West, North Carolina and fifteen grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Sunday at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Arnold Mark Belzer. Ann Sessoms Blount -

 

SAVANNAH - Ann joined her Lord December 19, 2009. She was the daughter of Aubrey K. Sessoms and Eoline Heriot Sessoms. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Judson Burl Blount, Jr. Survivors include her daughters Sharon B. Clarke and husband Gil and great-grandson Devin of Rincon and their daughters Elisabeth Clarke of Elmira, New York and Katie Clarke Hardy and husband John and their son Braeden of Waycross; Barbara B. Crow, and her son Del Crow, his wife Laura and their children Jackson, Hannah and Will of Savannah, and daughters April Favor and husband Keiven and their daughter Zoie of Fairbanks, Alaska and Crystal Morges and husband Keith of Savannah; and her son Judson B. Blount, III and wife Dawn and their children Heather and David of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Also surviving are her sister Eva S. Corners (Bill) of Savannah and brother, George W. Sessoms ( Ruth) of Lynchburg, Virginia and their families and cousins Ernest A. Sessoms and G. Herbert Griffen and their families of Savannah, Martha Bacot O'Brien of St. Augustine, Florida, Jean Heriot Delaney of Spanish Fork, Utah, Patricia Heriot Ryan (William) of Madison, Georgia, Julian Heriot of Washington, D.C., Missy Heriot, Nancy Heriot of Savannah and sisters-in-law Tory Visnich and her daughter Susie Gulledge and their family of Melbourne, Florida and Beverly B. Grayson and her family of Congers, Georgia. Ann spent a lifetime raising her family and contributing to her church and community in various ways. She was a teacher of the Winsome Sunday School Class, member of the Royal Service Missionary Society and held numerous teaching posts and jobs during her years as a member of the Southside Baptist Church. She was active in the Huntingdon Jr. Women's Guild- holding several positions and winning their coveted Homemaker of the Year Award in June 1965. She won the Chatham County Homemaker of the Year Award in August of 1965. She participated in Girl Scouts with her daughters and was a Den Mother for her sons Cub Scout Troop. She was also active in the PTA at Juliette Low Elementary School and held posts with the local PTA Council. She was an award winning floral arranger with the Forest Hills Garden Club, a member of the Shrinking Violet Red Hat Society, a member of the Bonaventure Chapter of the DAR, and a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority from Florida State College for Women. SAVANNAH - Ms. Marie Bryant, 93, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2009 at Hospice of Savannah. Born October 29, 1916 in Savannah, Georgia, she was the only child of Isiah and Agnes Bryant. Ms. Bryant received her formal education in the Savannah public school system. For over 26 years, she was employed by Chatham County Board of Education. In her special way, she honored God, treasured her family and held her friends in close esteem. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memories: Cousins, Edward and Loretta Miller, Sr., Frankie G. Edna Elizabeth King DePue -

 

SAVANNAH - Edna K. DePue was born on August 17, 1914 in Hillsboro, Georgia to William Edward and Pearl Middlebrooks King. She graduated from the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and worked in the Atlanta area for a number of years. In 2005, the Georgia Baptist Nurses Association, now a part of Mercer University, recognized Edna for over sixty years of service to her community and the nursing profession. While working in Atlanta, Edna met her future husband Charlie and they were married in 1938. The couple moved to Savannah in 1942 where Charlie worked as a Funeral Director with Sipples Mortuary. He later was employed by Savannah Machine and Foundry as an electrician and helped build minesweepers for the U. S. Navy during World War II. Edna stayed home to care for a baby and two invalid mothers who lived in her home for over 14 years. Edna and Charlie stepped out in faith together when they founded the DePue Wilbert Vault Co. in 1948. Edna often remarked that the only way she made it through those difficult years was her faith in God and the friends she made at the First Presbyterian Church, where she remained a faithful member for the rest of her life. She served in many roles at First Presbyterian during those years. She was honored by being named Elder Emerita of the Church in 2002. Edna was very active in the community serving with the Charles Ellis P.T.A., The American Red Cross, Wymberley Garden Club and many other organizations. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her positive attitude and bright smile lit up the lives of her family and her many friends. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles DePue and her son Robert Edward DePue. Survivors include Charles B. DePue, Jr. and Linda R. DePue, Charles B. DePue, III (Chad), Lauren E. DePue and Dean R. DePue, Deborah G. DePue, widow of Robert, Lydia C. DePue and Emily K. DePue, and five great-grandchildren. SAVANNAH - Gretchen M. Krahn, 94, of Pensacola, Florida for the past six years, died December 18, 2009. She was a communicant of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Savannah, Georgia. Gretchen was a retired registered nurse, employed 28 years by Union Camp Corporation. A native of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, she had resided in Savannah, Georgia since 1938. In 2003, she moved to Pensacola, Florida to be close to her adopted nephew, Nicholas Thorpe, who was responsible for her care. Visitation will be held at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel on Monday, December 21, 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Fred Lester Lanier -

 

SAVANNAH - Fred Lester Lanier, 84, died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 in the care of Hospice after a long illness. He was born and raised in Savannah. After working at Union Camp for 20 years, Fred left to devote his time to the fulltime ministry as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He became a traveling overseer, known as a Circuit Overseer, visiting congregations in more than 14 states, to strengthen and encourage them in studying the Bible and obeying our Creator, Jehovah God. After 32 years in this volunteer work, in which he visited more than 250 congregations, Fred, along with his wife, Gloria, returned home to Savannah to live with their daughters, Claire and Phyllis, on Wilmington Island. All five of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death, as well as his parents, John B. and Lisha James Lanier. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Burnsed Lanier, and their daughters, Claire and Phyllis Lanier. A memorial service will be held at the Fairhaven Funeral Home Chapel, 2794 W. Lawrence R. Loncon -

 

SAVANNAH - Mr. Lawrence R. "Larry" Loncon, 65, died Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Memorial University Medical Center. Larry was born in Savannah, GA. He grew up in Port Wentworth at the Sugar Refinery Village. He attended Cathedral Day School and graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1962. In 1969, he began an electrical apprenticeship through the IBEW Local 508. He earned his Master Electrician License in 1983 and built his own company, Larry Loncon Electrical Service. He was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 5588 and later joined Knights of Columbus 631. He served on the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee for many years. Larry was an avid golfer and a member of the Wilmington Island Club. He also loved to fish in the waters around Savannah and in the Florida Keys. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Julia Loncon, and his brother "Buster" Loncon. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Ann Loncon; his son Michael, daughter-in-law Leslie, grandsons Dillon and Russell; and his daughter Michelle; his sister Sr. Mary Bernarda, RSM; his sister and brother-in-law Mary and Salvador Castorina, of Frankfort, DE; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Judy Bakstran Lyle, sister-in-law, and Charlie Bakstran, brother-in-law. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 5:00 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 7020 Concord Rd. on Wilmington Island. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with a burial at the Catholic Cemetery. Herbert Lynn Richey, Junior -

 

SAVANNAH - Herbert Lynn Richey, Junior, age 90, passed away on December 18, 2009, at the home of his daughter in Midland, Texas, following a brief illness. He was born on November 16, 1919 in Camden, South Carolina, son of Herbert Lynn Richey and Marie Brewer Richey. He lived with his family in Camden until he went to North Carolina State University, where he earned a B.S. in Agronomy in 1943. Herb enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in Europe during World War II, primarily in France and Germany. Before his deployment, he married high school sweetheart Ida M. (Mickey) Richey in 1944. Herb was a proud veteran, and counted his trip to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. as one of the highlights of recent years. Following his release from the Army, Herb was employed as a chemist by the American Agricultural Chemical Company, and he remained in their employ all of his professional life. His career took him and his family to Columbia, SC; Savannah, GA; Baltimore, MD; Clinton, IA; and Baton Rouge, LA. He retired while in Baton Rouge, and then moved to his long-time family mountain home in Montreat, NC in 1989. Herb worshipped at the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, and was a valuable volunteer both there and with the Montreat Conference Center (Presbyterian Church U.S.A.) and the 10,000 Villages Self-Help Store. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Peter Mitchell Richey; and his sisters, Mary Richey White and Sara Lynn Richey. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mickey; son H. L. (Hank) Richey, III; and wife, Jennifer of Montreat, NC; son Joseph Perrin Richey and wife, Bunnie of Savannah, GA; daughter Robin Richey and husband, Gary Brednich of Midland, TX; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, GA, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2009. SAVANNAH - Bruce Ronald Weaver, 79, beloved, husband, father, and grandfather, died Friday, December 17, 2009 at home with his family by his side. He was a native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania and lived in Savannah most of his life. He served in the United States Air Force was retired after 30 years of service from Savannah Electric and Power Company. He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Martha Weaver, of Beaverdale, Pennsylvania, his brother, Glenn Weaver, and sister, Gwen Koppi, both of Tybee Island. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley S. Weaver, his daughter, Vicki Weaver Kennedy, and his grandson, Dylan Kennedy, all of Savannah. Visitation will be 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Islands Chapel of Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors. A private family service will be held on Monday.
