SAVANNAH - Mrs. Gertrude Hall Bacon, 92, entered into rest on Saturday, December 19, 2009. She was a native of Glennville, GA and lived in Savannah many years. She attended the public schools of Tattnall County. She was a member of Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church for over 67 years and in the Floral Club and Missionary Society. She was a retired domestic engineer for the Pearlman Family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Bacon, 7 sisters and 1 brother. She is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Betty Ellington, Mrs. Nancy B. SAVANNAH - William Charles Burdick, 86, of Savannah, GA, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Hospice of Savannah. He was born in Downey, CA, and was a veteran, having served in the US Navy during WWII. He worked in the telephone and cable industry until his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Cummings Burdick, of Savannah, GA; daughters, Gay Anderson and Lola Burdick Ayers; sister, Ernestine Burdick Trump; grandsons, Billy Anderson, Chris Burdick, and Alan Cartwright; granddaughters, Aukele Anderson, Le Ane Wohlgemuth, Sarah Peaster, Jennifer Russell, Tina McKinley, Sheryl Howe, and Tracy Cartwright, and several great-grandchildren. Charles Ellis Donnelly, Jr. (-December 23, 2009).  

 

SAVANNAH - On December 23, 2009, Heaven gained a new member for its Christmas Choir. Charles Ellis Donnelly, Jr., was a well loved member of St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church choir and could also be heard humming in the halls of Candler Hospital where he was a regular volunteer. He served as Lt. JG in the U.S. Navy and attended Emory University and graduated from Duke University with a degree in Engineering. Charlie worked for Peeples Industries and was a key contributor in many technological advances of his time. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Donnelly, his brother George Donnelly and daughter Theresa Donnelly; and survived by his children; Beth Donnelly; Chris and Barbara Donnelly; Jim and Alice Donnelly; Kathy and Bill Miller; Tricia and Stafford Barringer; Maggie Donnelly and Glenn Spedding; Maureen and Dave Evans; along with 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and countless friends and extended family. She enjoyed a successful career in the Real Estate industry, as an agent, broker and professional sales trainer. She will be remembered for her energy, spirit, and her generosity to anyone in need. Evelyn Louise Appleton Hamaker (June 13, 1927-December 14, 2009).  

 

SAVANNAH - Evelyn Louise Appleton Hamaker, 82, of Savannah, Ga., and most recently Greenfield Senior Living Center, Berryville, Va., passed away on Monday, December 14, 2009, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va. Born June 13, 1927, in Warrenton, Va., she was the daughter of the late Calvin Appleton and Macon Burke Appleton. She was a member of the Fort Stewart Chapel at Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. She was a clerk at Fort Myer, Va., after World War II and worked in a small business in Savannah in the 1970-80s. Evelyn was the most beloved mother and mother-in-law of four children and their spouses: son Scott E. Hamaker and wife Andy of Kennewick, Wa.; daughter Tracey H. Rissler and husband Ron of Charles Town, W.Va.; son Gary R. Hamaker and wife Vicki of Brandon, Fl.; and daughter Terry A. Bloxham and husband Colin of Aylesbury, England. She loved her three grandchildren, Megan H. Swander (husband Carl), Seth Hamaker, and Matthias Hamaker; and two great-grandchildren Paige and Claire Swander. Surviving Evelyn are three much-loved sisters-in-law, Goldie Appleton of Ashburn, Va., Betty Appleton of Arlington, Va., Joan Appleton of Oxford, Pa.; one half-brother and two half-sisters Tom, Charlotte, and Sherrie Noland; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her World War II, Korean, and Vietnam veteran husband Norman Elsworth Hamaker; by three brothers, Fritz, Sam, and Dick Appleton; and one sister Betty Appleton. Evelyn was devoted to the Gozdek family--Jerry and Elizabeth (who she called her other daughter) and their daughters Nelly and Sylvia. Evelyn treasured her relationship with best friend Inge Smith and neighbors Lois and Davis Chafin. We love you Mom! There will be an open house for family and friends at daughter Tracey Rissler's home at 616 Uinta Farm Lane (off Kabletown Road), Charles Town, W.Va. on Sunday, December 27 at 1:00 pm. HARDEEVILLE, SC - Eloise Smith Into "Granny Into", 90, of Hardeeville, SC and widow of Vaino Pete Into, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009 in the Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, SC. She was born in Tillman, SC on September 7, 1919. She was the daughter of the late William and Mamie Youmans Smith. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She was a member of the Hardeeville Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Bluffton, SC. She is survived by three daughters, Hilma (Myron) Rountree of Hardeeville, SC, Helen (Charles) Mack of Carrollton, GA and Judy (Robert) Burpitt of Gray, TN; nine grandchildren, Marlene Long and Randy Sexton both of Knoxville, TN, Jennifer Coburn and Matt Rountree both of Hardeeville, SC, Bert Burpitt of Fall Branch, TN, Chuck Mack, Linda Blair, Sherri Nalley and Kevin Mack all of Carrollton, GA; eighteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Annie Mae Raymond and two brothers, Stacy and Wilbur Smith. He worked for CSX for 33 years as a machine operator until his health failed. He was also a member of the Rail Road Union. Mr. McIver was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. PORT WENTWORTH - Mrs. Vernalee Grovenstein Mercer, 85, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Christian City Nursing Home in Union City. Mrs. Mercer was born in Effingham County and had lived in Port Wentworth for most of her life before moving to the Atlanta area for health reasons. She was a retired school bus driver for the Chatham County school system. She was a member of the Port Wentworth United Methodist Church for many years and was preceded in death by her husband, Marcell Mercer. Mrs. Mercer was involved with many Church and community activities. One of her greatest joys was camping every year with their many friends and relatives. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn & Connie Mercer of Newnan; grandchildren, Melanie Mercer, Stephanie McMurray and Chris Foster and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Rebekah, Ben and Alex; her brothers, Lowell Grovenstein and Rev. Lillian E. Parrish (1920-September 15, 1943-December 21, 2009).  

 

SAVANNAH - Lillian E. Parrish, 89, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of Walter W. Parrish, is with her Lord and Savior! She departed this life Monday evening, December 21, 2009, at Azalealand Nursing Home under the care of Hospice Savannah. Born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late Ludvig Jensen and the late Alida Sofia Terjesen Jensen. Her parents left Norway as indentured servants just before World War I; her father as a ship's carpenter and her mother as a domestic cook. Lillian was the last of seven children born. Married on September 15, 1943, Lil had lived in Savannah since 1974. She leaves behind sweet memories of her church, Bible Baptist, and a dedication to the Lighted Pathway Class, a ministry for the mentally challenged. Other talents include years spent as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Lillian was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers. She is survived by her husband of almost sixty seven years, Walter W. Parrish of Savannah, Georgia; two daughters, Barbara Allen and her husband, Jim Leffel, of Savannah, Georgia, and Jean Gladys Parrish of Jacksonville, Florida; three sons, David Bruce Parrish and Richard Walter Parrish and his wife, Patricia, all of Ellabell, Georgia, and Thomas William Parrish and his life partner, Karen Martin, of Savannah, Georgia; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grand children. The funeral service was held at 10 o'clock Thursday morning in the Chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Thomas W. Mrs. Herbaline Rich (1918-2009).  

 

STATESBORO - Mrs. Herbaline Rich, age 91 passed away peacefully at her residence after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Mrs. Gertrude Everett and a native of Bulloch County. She lived in Newark, NJ for many, many years before returning to Statesboro in the early eighties. She was a member of the Historical First African Baptist Church and was retired from the US Postal services in New Jersey. She is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Lee, Newark, NJ; a sister, Mrs. Katherline Coleman, Savannah and a devoted caregiver Ms. Betty Robbins, Statesboro and other relatives and friends. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Rich will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 26, 2009 at Historical First African Baptist Church. Rev. E. Charles Lee, Pastor. Rev. Stanford Anderson, Eulogist.
