Mrs. Marie E. Arledge -

 

TOWNSEND - Mrs. Marie E. Arledge, fondly known as Mama, Mema, Ms. Marie and Aunt Ree, 87, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 under the care of Hospice Savannah. Mrs. Arledge was born in Tattnall County and was a graduate of Glennville High School. She was a longtime resident of Pooler and attended the First Baptist Church of Pooler until retirement to the Pleasure Bluff Community in Townsend in 1985. She was a member of the Shellman Bluff Baptist Church and was a dedicated Choir member. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, and being with family. Mrs. Arledge is survived by her two daughters, Janice Crawford of Eufaula, AL, Elaine Scarborough and husband, Dale Scarborough of Savannah; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Joyce Richey of Port Wentworth and a host of nieces and nephews. The celebration of Mrs. Arledge's life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Shellman Bluff Baptist Church in Townsend. Their will be a visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. in the Church sanctuary. LAKELAND, FL - Anne M. Braddy, age 82, passed away November 24, 2009 at L.R.M.C. of heart failure. Anne was born August 17, 1927 in Trenton, N.J. to Herbert Patrick & Helen (Young) Meighen. Anne moved to Lakeland, FL. 42 years ago from Knoxville, TN. Anne was a homemaker and a member of Resurrection Catholic Church. Anne was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Anne is preceded in death by her husband Woodrow J. Braddy and sister Patricia Marlin. Anne is survived by son Michael J. (Carol) Braddy-Tampa, daughters Helen Braddy (Steven) Woods-Savannah, GA., Karen Braddy-Lakeland, FL., sisters Rose Meighen-Tybee Island, GA., Mary Louise McAfee- Savannah, GA., grandchildren-Anthony, Nicole, Chris & Lauren and one great granddaughter-Bella. Mr. Raleigh DeWitt Bynes -

 

SAVANNAH - Mr. Raleigh DeWitt Bynes, 55, died November 29, 2009 in his home after a 17 year illness with Multiple Myeloma. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was educated in the Chatham County Public Schools graduating from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1971. He matriculated at Savannah State College (University) and graduated with honors in 1975 with a degree in Mortuary Science from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Bynes was certified at both the State and National levels. He was the General Manager of Bynes-Royall Funeral Home, Inc., the oldest Black-owned mortuary in the United States. His professional affiliations included membership in the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association, Inc., the National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, Inc. and the Epsilon Nu Delta Mortician's Fraternity. Mr. Bynes was also socially active, prior to his illness, in the following organizations, Mt. Moriah Lodge #15, Prince Hall Masons; Ezra Consistory #27, 32nd degree Mason; President of the Wolves Social Club; The Waldorf Social Club; the Mutual Benevolent Society and the Aristocrats. In addition, Mr. Bynes was a former Board Member of the Greenbriar Children's Home. He was a lifetime member of St. John Baptist Church "The Mighty Fortress" where he served as former President of the Senior Usher Board and continued to serve as an usher until his illness prevailed. As the recipient of many honors and awards, the most recent included Mortician of the Year 2006, 1st place winner of The 100 Celebrity Men Cook-off 2007 and 1st place winner of the "Flying Pigs" Pooler Cook-off 2007. Among his hobbies was cooking, fishing, traveling, attending sporting events, socializing with friends and enjoying family. He was married to the former Patricia Gail Brown who preceded him in death and the son of the late lamented Frank H. Bynes, Sr. Surviving are daughters; Mrs. Tara Bynes-Jackson (Kevin), Ms. Teri Marie Bynes and Ms. Toya Patricia Bynes; granddaughters, Paris Patricia Jackson and Sydnei Ra Leigh Roberts; grandson, Quovious 'Mel' Jackson; mother, Mrs. Frenchye M. Bynes; companion, Ms. Cheryl Blair (and her daughter, Jakeva Blair); sisters, Mrs. Olga B. Bland (Donald), Mrs. Frenchye Bynes-Jones (Carey) and Mrs. Lisa B. Reid (Anthony) of Alpharetta, GA; brother, Dr. Frank H. Ronald Kolman FAIA -

 

SAVANNAH - Ronald Kolman passed away quietly on Tuesday, December 1st. He was born in Savannah on September 18, 1932 and was predeceased by his parents, Barney and Eileen Kolman. Mr. Kolman was an accomplished and highly respected architect and public servant. He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1957 and returned to Savannah to establish practice here that lives on as Lominack Kolman Smith Architects. Among his many achievements were his public service with MPC, Historic District Board of Review, Historic Savannah, Union Mission, many other civic organizations, as well as many city and county appointments. He was also a charter member of the Savannah Sport Fishing Club. His service to his profession was unequaled. His professional achievements were many. He served as President of the South Georgia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects six times, received Bronze Medal (AIA Georgia), the Kolman Award (AIA Savannah), the Rothschild Award (AIA Georgia), and became a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 2001. Mr. Kolman enjoyed traveling and exploring the country with his wife and friends. He loved woodworking and was a member of the Low Country Woodturners. He loved his family dearly, was an advocate for those in need, volunteered tirelessly to bring joy to others, and worked very hard to make Savannah a better place for all of us. Mr. Kolman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne Lee Tyree Kolman, two daughters, Anne Kolman Smith (Edgar) and Karen Kolman Gwinner, his sisters Bette Kolman Perry (Edward) and Dolores "Dolly" Kolman Beacham (Franklin), grandchildren, Amy McKinney, Chris Gwinner, Ben Gwinner, Edgar Smith III, and Rosie Gwinner, two great-grandchildren and several neices and nephews. SAVANNAH - Homer Foster, 84, died Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital. The Erwin, TN native lived in Savannah since 1976. He was a Pilot in the U.S. Air Force and served in the U.S. Army. He was veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. SAVANNAH - Richard P. "Dick" Ienuso, died at Hospice House of Savannah, Tuesday, December 1, 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on July 2, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Claire Youmans Scofield and Paskell Ienuso. He was raised in Estill, S.C. and moved to Savannah, GA. in 1955. He was living in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida until the past four years when he moved in with his daughter, Kelly Farmer in Statesboro, Georgia. Richard was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Exchange Club and Kiwanis Club. He was past president of the Chatham Artillery and served on the board of directors of the Ponte Vedra Association for several years. He was a retired veteran of the United States Army. Richard is survived by his former wife, Dale S. Ienuso, his three children, Richard P. Ienuso, Jr., and his wife, Donna, Kelly I. Farmer, and her husband, Randy, and Staci I. Rogers, his five grandchildren, Andrew, Summer, Brittany, Skyler, and Garrett, one great-grandson, Alex and one sister, Shirley Nation. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Dorothy Barnard Williams McCoy -

 

SAVANNAH - Dorothy Barnard Williams McCoy was born in Savannah, Georgia, on June 10, 1928, the baby daughter of Henry and Naomi Butler Barnard. She was educated in the local public school system and graduated from Woodville High School. She received her nursing training at New York University Medical Center. At a very early age, she joined in the tradition of her maternal grandfather, a founding member, in making Connors Temple Baptist Church her faith home. There she served in the ministries of the Choir, Building Representatives, Nurses Corps, Deaconess Board, and in many other ministries and capacities. She was also an active and loyal member of Ruth Chapter #3 of the International F. & A. M. Masons, Order of Eastern Stars. She was a member of the Pacesetters Social Club and of the Sylvan Terrace Community Association. She was also, very proudly, a member of the West Savannah School Alumni Association. As a young woman, she relocated to New York City -for a period of time, where she had a career in healthcare. She was employed at Avon Nursing Home in Brooklyn, New York and at New York University Medical Center in Manhattan, New York. She continued her career of caring for people upon her return to Savannah, and retired from Chatham Nursing Home in 1984. "Motherdear", as she was affectionately known by many, was proud of her West Savannah home community and kept everyone very clear on the wonderful history of the area. She was also an avid gardener, and most important, a doting mother and grandmother. She lived her passion by caring for her family. Surrounded by this loving family, Dorothy peacefully transitioned to her eternal rest on November 25, 2009. Cherishing Dorothy's memory are: her children, Wesley E. Williams, a retired educator, Myra McCoy Pope, MD, Patricia McCoy Brown, DMD (Sage) all of Savannah, and Carolyn Williams Clark of New Jersey; her grandchildren, Charles Moore (Kay) of Memphis, Waita Moore of New York, Nohemi Williams Manuel (Ken) of Chattanooga, Akhnaton Pope of Augusta, GA, Azikiwe Pope of Savannah, David Clark of New Jersey, Menelik Pope, Sage Brown, II, Weslyn Williams, and Tasagdra Brown all of Savannah; ten great-grandchildren, many devoted cousins; and a treasured friend and loving companion Mr. David Polite. There were many who loved her, thought of her as their mother and called her "Motherdear". Charles Andrew Pidgeon (March 19, 1954-December 1, 2009).  

 

SAVANNAH, CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA - Charles Andrew Pidgeon, 55, was born on March 19, 1954 in Amityville, NY. He left this world to surf the biggest waves of his life on December 1, 2009. He was diagnosed less than one month ago with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Pidgeon worked at Smith & Kelly following high school. He was also employed by TTT, YS Lines, NYK Lines, and JLCC. He also worked with Ceres Marine Terminal on a part-time basis and lastly, YangMing Lines. He was respected by many on the waterfront, and loved to surf. His favorite place to surf was Hawaii, but he loved all of the beaches along the coast. His biggest love of all was his wife, TinaBelle, who he married on May 5, 1978. He has requested that all who attend his memorial service wear their favorite jeans and favorite Dawgs or surfing shirt. Mr. Pidgeon was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Marie Wood Pidgeon. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Tina Pidgeon; son, Chuck Braddock and wife Carrie of Guyton, GA; daughter, Sunny Miller and husband Ben of St. Francis, MN; grandchildren, Lilly and Herschel Braddock and Andrew Miller; his father, Charles W. Pidgeon of Savannah, GA; sister, Virginia "Bird" Rost of Rincon, GA; brother, Barry Pidgeon of San Jose, CA; many nieces and nephews and too many friends to count. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Mr. Bobby K. Purcell -

 

PEMBROKE - Mr. Bobby K. Purcell, age 81 died Tuesday morning, Dec. 1, 2009 at his home while under the care of his family and Hospice Savannah. Mr. Purcell was a 1946 graduate of Bryan County High School and attended Georgia Southern College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served two tours of duty. Mr. Purcell received the WWII Victory Medal, the Germany Occupation Medal (1946-1947) and the Japan Occupation Medal (1950- 1952). He was a former employee of the State Highway Department, owned and operated the Ford dealership in Pembroke for over 19 years, retired from Liberty Memorial Hospital as maintenance supervisor, and was a member of Pembroke First Baptist Church for 70 years. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Wynelle Henderson Purcell, two sons and daughters-in-law Wayne and Debra Purcell of Claxton and Owen and Cindy Purcell of Pembroke, and five adored grandchildren, Lauren, Katie, Bobby, Maggie and Zachary. Visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Friday in the chapel of Flanders Morrison Funeral Home with Dr. Brad Butler and Elder Spencer Moore officiating. Mrs. Myra Wallace -

 

POOLER - Mrs. Myra Wallace, 85, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones, on December 1, 2009, following a brief illness. She was a native of Sparta, GA, but had lived in Pooler since 1946. She was the daughter of William J. and Myra Archer, who preceded her in death. Her siblings, James, Carlton, Evans, Charles, Caroline, and Sara, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Wallace was a homemaker and a member of the Pooler First Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Grady Franklin Wallace, Jr., and her children: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wallace (Ginger) of Monroe, GA; James (Jimmy) G. Wallace of Pooler, GA; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Purvis (Myra) of Claxton, GA. Grandchildren surviving are Mr. and Mrs. Mike Myers (Amanda) of Claxton, GA; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Romero (Kristi Wallace) of Covington, GA; Mr. and Mrs. C. Brenton Wallace (Katherine) of Oxford, GA; Robert A. Clark of Statesboro, GA; Jessica R. Wallace of Athens, GA; Lee Purvis of Claxton, GA; Luke Purvis of Statesboro, GA; and two great grandchildren, Matthew and Tanner Myers of Claxton, GA. Visitation will be Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
