Billy H. Braswell, Sr. -

 

CENTERVILLE - Billy H. Braswell, Sr., 75, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2009, in Macon, GA. Mr. Braswell was born on February 13, 1934 in Black, Alabama. He was the son of the late Henry L. and Mary Agnes (Summerset) Braswell. His military career spanned from 1952 to 1973, having served in the United States Air Force, Army and Navy Reserves. He was a 53 year union operating engineer with local #474 in Savannah, GA and was the past Dept. of GA DAV State Commander and Adjutants having served offices from 1978-1999. He was a lifetime member of the DAV Chapter #33 in Warner Robins, Chapter #8 in Savannah, Chapter #33 in New Mexico, VFW Post # 6605 in Warner Robins and also the Commander and Adjutants Association. He was a member of the American Legion Post #174, Vietnam Veteran Chapter # 443, National Order of Trench Rats Dugout #383 and the At-Large Chapter of the AM-Vets. He was a member of the Calumet Lodge #716 A.F. & A.M. in Hazel Crest, IL and a member of the York Rite & Scottish Rite bodies and the Al Sihah Temple in Macon. He was a member of the Pembroke United Methodist Church in Pembroke, GA. Survivors include his wife of 48 years Loretta S. Braswell of Centerville, son Billy H. Braswell, Jr. of Perry, daughter, Deborah M. (Frank) Stewart of Leesburg, GA, grandchildren, Brittini M. (Joel Michael, II) McNally of CA, Cheyenne Braswell of Pinnacle, NC, Brandon T. Stewart of Leesburg, GA, sister Ruby J. Alford of Bloomingdale, GA, many nieces and nephews and a dear friend Richard Fleming of Fletcher, NC. Mr. Carroll was a long-time resident of Ellabell and was a retired truck driver. He was an excellent shade tree mechanic and attended Black Creek Holy Church of God. Charles Hinton Drake, MD -

 

GLENNVILLE - Charles Hinton Drake, MD, 91 died December 3, 2009 in Savannah after a long illness. He was a native of Tattnall County, Georgia, born August 29, 1918, the eldest child of Claude Hinton Drake and Alice Gordon Murray. He attended Indiana Central College before enlisting in the United States Air Force in March 1941. In the service he was initially trained as a bombardier and later as a combat intelligence officer. He served in the 391st Bomb Group of the 9th Air Force and saw action in England, France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany, rising to the rank of MAJOR by the time he left service in 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star. Following the war, on September 25, 1946, he married Estelle Carolyn Nail, also of Tattnall County. He attended Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia, receiving his MD degree in 1951. After an internship at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, he moved to Glennville in 1952 to begin his medical practice. He was one of the last old-fashioned country doctors and was loved by the many patients he cared for during his thirty years of practice. He was a committed Christian and had a deep and abiding faith in God. Although he was not an ordained minister, he considered all that he did a form of service to his Lord. In 1968, he became the first medical director of Glenvue Nursing Home, which he eventually purchased and owned for nearly thirty years before it was sold in 1997. In 1969, he helped found Pinewood Christian Academy, serving as one of its first directors. In 1984, he was honored to receive a coat-of-arms from the College of Arms in London, granted under the authority of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He was a member of the Order of Lafayette, an hereditary society of United States military officers who assisted in the liberation of France in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Estelle; two children, Charles Edward Drake and Carol Louise Drake, both of Savannah; daughter-in-law, Rita Chabot Drake, and grandchild, Vivienne Rita Drake. He was predeceased by one brother, James L. Drake, and is survived by one brother, Dr. R. L. Drake of Gainesville, Florida. He is survived by four sisters, Mae Drake Lynn of Collins, Georgia, Betty Drake Collins of Lyons, Georgia, Joyce Drake Rivers of Collins, and Margaret Drake Williamson of Eastman, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Betty Sikes Drake of Gainesville, Florida and Frankie Rich Drake of Commerce, Georgia; and two brothers-in-law, J. H. Collins of Lyons and James Williamson of Eastman, plus many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville on Friday evening, December 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home chapel, Glennville at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 5. Interment will be in the Glennville City Cemetery. Mrs. Margaret was a homemaker, enjoyed cooking for her family, and loved her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. SAVANNAH - Augusta Alexander Montague Glover, 87, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Carr Sullivan Glover III, died Wednesday morning, December 2, 2009, at The Place at Pooler. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Ralph Rodney Montague and the late RosaLee Foster Montague Thorpe. Mrs. Glover graduated from Armstrong College in 1942 with an associate of arts degree, The University of Georgia in 1945 with an AB in Sociology and Tulane University in 1949 with a degree in social work. She was employed with the Chatham County School system for over fifteen years and worked as a social worker and as a special education school teacher. Mrs. Glover also worked as a real estate agent for several years. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Ascension and served as past Sunday School Superintendent. Mrs. Glover was a member of Augsburg Sunday School Class, the Rebecca Derrick Circle and a member of the Wymberly Garden Club. Surviving are two daughters, Caroline A. Glover of Savannah, Georgia, and Mary Glover Renew and her husband, James, of Pembroke, Georgia; one son, C. Harold Glover of Savannah, Georgia; two grandchildren, Jennifer Lee Hughes and her husband, Michael of Guyton, Georgia, J. Erik Renew of Pembroke, Georgia; one brother, R.E. "Sonny" Thorpe, Jr. and his wife Dale of Savannah, Georgia, her sister in-law, Martha Autry of Macon, Georgia and four nieces and nephews. He graduated from Emanuel County Institute in 1957 and retired from International Paper in 2001. He was a veteran of the United States Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy H. Thompson of Savannah, GA and Alberta Hendley of Garfield, GA; and his brother, Perry L. Hendley, Jr. of Garfield, GA. She was a stay at home Mom for 20 years then returned to school and became a tax accountant for 32 years. She loved her family and her Bingo family, but most of all her husband of 64 years. She was a member of Sunday School at Bible Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband Robert L. Maxey, Sr., of Savannah, Ga.; 4 children, Candy M. (Chuck) Barefield, Robin L. Charles Andrew Pidgeon -

 

SAVANNAH - Charles Andrew Pidgeon, 55, was born on March 19, 1954 in Amityville, NY. He left this world to surf the biggest waves of his life on December 1, 2009. He was diagnosed less than one month ago with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Pidgeon worked at Smith & Kelly following high school. He was also employed by TTT, YS Lines, NYK Lines, and JLCC. He also worked with Ceres Marine Terminal on a part-time basis and lastly, YangMing Lines. He was respected by many on the waterfront, and loved to surf. His favorite place to surf was Hawaii, but he loved all of the beaches along the coast. His biggest love of all was his wife, TinaBelle, who he married on May 5, 1978. He has requested that all who attend his memorial service wear their favorite jeans and favorite Dawgs or surfing shirt. Mr. Pidgeon was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Marie Wood Pidgeon. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Tina Pidgeon; son, Chuck Braddock and wife Carrie of Guyton, GA; daughter, Sunny Miller and husband Ben of St. Francis, MN; grandchildren, Lilly and Herschel Braddock and Andrew Miller; his father, Charles W. Pidgeon of Savannah, GA; sister, Virginia "Bird" Rost of Rincon, GA; brother, Barry Pidgeon of San Jose, CA; many nieces and nephews and too many friends to count. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. John was born in Savannah on January 14, 1964, and was raised on his family estate "Crosswinds" in Millen. John did many things throughout his life, but using his artistic talents was his favorite. He excelled in photography, creating stained glass, landscaping, and interior design. He loved his family, wonderful music, his Camaro, his pets, and Huss the chicken. John was preceded in death by his father John Lee Rollins and close family friend Allen S. Kelly. He is survived by his life partner Alvin Joseph Riley of Pt.
